Ironman Wales 2016 Kevin Phelps—SurfhavenWith Ironman Wales once again landing on thePembrokeshire shores it was time to throw my hatinto the ring once again for my third and, possiblylast Ironman event for quite some time. This year the near perfect conditions created a truechallenge as we could no longer blame the massiveswell of 2011 or the strong easterlies of 2015. No,there were no excuses this time – it was theathletes against the course and that was it!With the crowd and phenomenal support possiblyeven bigger than in previous years it was anincredible occasion. Standing on the beachlistening to the National Anthem made thecountless hours of training, often early in themorning in wind or rain, all worthwhile. As with any Ironman event, it was very tough. There’s no such thing as an easy Ironman andthere is no doubt that Ironman Wales is in a leagueof its own for grit and challenge but it is also trulyunique, defined by the awesome power of thesupport from thousands and thousands of spectators. It is indescribable and it iswonderful to be a part of something so special.I completed the course in 13 hours and 26 minutes, beating my previous time by 11minutes. My thanks to everyone, especially my family, for their wonderful support ona truly memorable day. Well done Kevin—a great achievement. This is the fourth year we have been able to celebrate an Ironman in Llanteg with Kevin competing in 2013 and 2014 and Jonathan Roberts in 2015. FACEBOOK If you ‘like’ the ‘Llanteg Village‟ Facebook page you will have instant updates of any Llanteg news and it is a quick way to keep in touch.

LLANTEG NATURE RAMBLINGS Kevin Caley [email protected] an ecologist, I find myself looking out of our windows at this time of year andturning my mind to autumn, with its crossover of summer migrants leaving andwinter migrants arriving amid a blaze of oranges and golds as the leaves on the treesand shrubs lose their green chlorophyll, revealing the glorious colours that were, until now, hidden by their energy-gathering exploits. In particular, I am drawn to our hedgerows, as not only arethey overflowing with autumn fruits such as blackberriesand hawthorn berries, but they are still in flower withlate-flowering ivy, a magnet for autumn butterflies such asthe red admiral and small tortoiseshell before they go intohibernation, and for bees and wasps before they, too, gointo a deep sleep (‘the Big Snooze’, as the RSPB havecalled it).Healthy hedgerows are such an important part of thelandscape, not just in terms of their aesthetics, but alsobecause of their importance for wildlife. Gone are the dayswhen our land was covered in great renewing native forests, so these habitats mustact as corridors, linking up cut-off populations of declining species, common andrare alike, as well as acting as refuges for other species which find it difficult to livein modern farmland, so it is important that we nurture them. We are lucky in that our south border, beyond the house (The Downs) at least, is home to a magnificent hedge, full of blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel and honeysuckle, with a good spattering of ivy, particularly along the edge of our coppice. Last winter we found a large flock of redwings feeding off the berries there, accompanied by their other Scandinavian relatives, the fieldfares, which brought us great delight in what was, let’s face it, rather a wet beginning to 2016. So, I write this in anticipation, but also hoping for less rain ..... 7 Toby Phelps, Llanteg’s Most Famous Birder Toby Phelps from Surfhaven, Llanteg is now studying Zoology at Exeter University and is based at the Penryn Campus near Falmouth. He frequently goes birding around the Lizard Point and other areas in Southern Cornwall. The flow of easterly winds through October, the period of visible migration, has created ideal birding conditions with many rare visitors landing in Cornwall as well as in Pembrokeshire. Toby has dedicated himself this year to find and officially confirm as many species of birds in Britain as possible. He finally reached his target of 200 species, probably the youngest birder in Britain to achieve this goal, in October after identifying a pair of ring ouzels at Kynance Cove, Cornwall. Toby’s Tips: For the more specialised birders, towards theend of this year listen out for a ‘sooeet’ sound in any wooded areas around theLlanteg area. This is likely to be the very rare yellow-browed warbler, a secretivevisitor from Siberia which is someway off course. Another regular winter visitor isthe redwing, similar to a song thrush but with a red wing area. These beautiful birdsare mainly found eating berries out of a number of trees including holly andelderberry and are very common around Llanteg. Finally, peanuts and great spotted woodpeckers go hand in hand so the easiest way toattract them to your garden is by hanging out peanut feeders and the woodpeckerswill surely come! Degree SuccessMargaret and Tony Brinsden of Norton Lodge would like tocongratulate their daughter, Helen Furneaux, on attaining herMasters degree in Public Health and Health Promotion throughthe Open University.Helen is a senior health visitor in Burry Port. Concert at Heatherland, LlantegOn Friday June 10th Charles and Clare Carter hosted a musical evening atHeatherland in aid of Côr Dyfed Choir. Choir members and friends gathered fordrinks and canapés in the garden in the early evening and, much to everyone’srelief, the rain held off. Musical entertainment was provided by Pembrokeshire’searly music group La Volta. The musicians performed a varied selection and itwas wonderful to hear the house filled with the sound of renaissance and medievalinstruments including flutes, recorders, fiddle, tabor and cymbals.More refreshments were followed by the completion of a silent auction. Fundsraised for this event are to be used to support Côr Dyfed Choir who celebrate their50th Anniversary Year in 2017. The choir were most grateful to all who supportedthe event at Heatherland and especially to La Volta for their superb performanceand amusing musical anecdotes. The choir’s next concert is on Saturday 12thNovember at St Peter’s Church, Goodwick, where they will perform two newworks especially commissioned for the Anniversary Year. For more information www.dyfedchoir.org.uk

AMROTH WARD COUNTY COUNCILLOR Tony Brinsden 831775 [email protected] is flying by and it is only six months or so to the next Local Governmentelections, in which I shall be taking no part. The past six months have been verybusy since I took over as Chairman of the PCC. I have had to attend many eventswithin the County during this time, as well as some outside the County. What I havelearnt through this is that Pembrokeshire has a great wealth of home grown talent inall walks of life and cultures. We are still struggling to reduce our costs as we have to reduce our expenditure by£11.3 million in this financial year. If you have any comment on this please takepart in the consultation which is open until the end of December on the PCC websitewww.pembrokeshire.gov.uk At the same time that we are expected to make thesecuts we are having foisted upon us The Welsh Language Act by the WelshGovernment. What this means is that all official documents have to be available inboth English and Welsh. In effect all agendas, minutes etc have to be translated andpublished in both languages. When you consider that some Agendas run intohundreds of pages you can imagine what extra work and expense this entails. I amcertainly not anti-Welsh language but I do feel that in these times of austerity it isnot the time to have these regulations thrust upon us which could have a costimplication of up to a million pounds. To reduce the printing costs Councillors are no longer being supplied with paperagendas unless they specifically request them and then they are charged for them. Those of us who do not wish to have paper agendas use tablets or iPads to receivethe information electronically. The devices are purchased by the individualCouncillor. This method is likely to result in an annual saving of £20,000.00p.On a happier note I would like to congratulate Stepaside CP School on winning theSustainable Schools Acorn Award which is the highest of the Sustainable SchoolsAwards. It was an honour for me to present the School with the Award last week. One event which will stick in my mind was the Ironman event. To see over 2000athletes enter the water at Tenby's North Beach just as the sun was rising was quiteawe-inspiring, as was watching them cycling up St Brides Hill. I then remained onthe Esplanade with the Mayor of Tenby handing out Finisher’s medals to the athletesas they completed the event. This made me think of what is going to happen to the Leisure and Cultural serviceswithin Pembrokeshire as a result of the massive cuts that have to be made. A publicconsultation period has just ended and an outside company has been consulted toassist but the whole issue will be discussed at a forthcoming Cabinet meeting wherea decision will be made as to the best way to proceed. We are getting close to the end of the year so it only remains for me to wish you all avery Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher—Kevin Phelps School—01834 831691 [email protected] tavernspiteschool.co.ukTavernspite and Templeton became federated in April and both schools have grownfrom strength to strength. Templeton School, facing possible closure in 2014 anddown to its last 58 pupils, now has exceeded 100 pupils and is becoming recognisedas one of the better performing schools in the County. Tavernspitecontinues to enjoy an enviable reputation, being full to capacity and with a waitinglist. After researching the success of this federation, a best practice report has beenwritten by Estyn (see estyn.gov.uk). I had the wonderful pleasure of speaking at anational conference organised by Estyn in the Principality Stadium, Cardiff inOctober.Other news………….We welcomed two trainee teachers from WuppertalUniversity, Germany in the summer term to support in classes and develop theirEnglish. There was great excitement when we enrolled in the Reading Dog schemecalled ‘Burns by your side’ in which Frank (a wonderful Labrador) ‘listens’ to thechildren reading to help them develop reading skills and well-being. It is a way toencourage reluctant readers. Our musicians and choir performed in an assembly withthe audience enjoying guitar, violin, drums, singing and woodwind performances. Ahighlight was our new ukulele orchestra many of whom were infant age pupils. Our Year 6 pupils made their annual trip to Skomer Island, a magical place. Theisland was covered in bluebells with puffins nesting in burrows alongside the path. There is simply nowhere better to see puffins up close as well as little owls, peregrine falcons, grey seals and many other forms of wildlife. At the end of theschool year there was some sadness as we prepared to say farewell to our Year 6leavers who performed one last time at their Leavers’ Assembly with Cllr HuwGeorge. The children really entertained the audience with a hilarious sketch based onthe theme of Bear Grylls ‘The Island’, including some excellent teacherimpersonations. This was followed by an amazing Shakespearean performance of‘Macbeth’. The children were sent off in style to start their secondary schoolcareers and we wished them every future success and happiness and thanked themfor their enormous contribution to Tavernspite School. We enjoyed a brilliant 5K Fun Run at Colby Woodlands as a fundraiser with over a100 children/adults taking part. We were all very grateful to the team from the ColbyParkrun who volunteered to marshal. The girls’ football team played at the Urdd County finals at Camrose FCrepresenting Tenby Cluster of Schools and played some excellent football. The girls’tag rugby team played in the Pembrokeshire Schools Festival. Our mixed kwik cricket team had an exciting day at the Tenby Cluster of Schoolstournament and won nearly all of their matches and qualified for the Pembrokeshireschools competition held at Haverfordwest Cricket Club where they played someexcellent cricket. A number of our athletes competed in the Dyfed PrimaryChampionships in Queen Elizabeth High School in Carmarthen, the PembrokeshireSchools tournament at Sir Thomas Picton, Haverfordwest and the Infant Area Sportsat Greenhill.

We hosted the third ‘Fairtrade Football World Cup’ and welcomed numerousschools from across Pembrokeshire using Fairtrade footballs. Each team represented aFairtrade country across the world. Congratulations to the tournament winners TenbyJuniors who have won this tournament for the second year running.Congratulations to the Red Kites who won the Infant Sports Day and to the YellowHawks who won the Junior Sports Day house shield for the second year running.Special congratulations to Llanteg resident Ieuan Hill from Hafan Clyd who won theJunior Victor Ludorum award. Ieuan also won the coveted long distance title for thejuniors for the second year running.A summer fete organised by the Friends ofTavernspite School (FoTS) followed the sportsday events. The ‘Bushtukka’, our newoutdoor craft and cookery area, wasofficially opened and served freshly cooked pizzafrom the pizza oven to all present. TheBushtukka was built using funds from anincredible FoTS fundraising effort in recentyears, by local film maker and playgroundequipment designer, Mr Dave Welton ofLower Pendeilo. There was so much to do andsee, including numerous stalls andactivities, bouncy castle, demonstrations, and amusical performance from our very own teacher Mr. Henton, who was fantastic!Admissions - A reminder to new and prospective parents….If you would like yourchild to attend Tavernspite School then please contact the school to arrange a visit andwe will talk you through the admission process. Please don’t delay as it is becomingincreasingly difficult to secure a place so you will need to arrange your child’sadmission in plenty of time. Places are no longer guaranteed by the Local Authorityfor families living within the catchment area. Regrettably numerous admissionapplications have already been turned down because the applications were notreceived early enough.Thank you for taking the time to read our school news!If you wish to know anything else please do not hesitate to contact me at school. 17 STEPASIDE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher—Paul Harries School—01834 812764 [email protected] www.stepasideschool.co.ukWe had a very busy summer term with sports days, drama performances and prizegivings. We waved goodbye to ten Year 6 pupils as they headed off to their secondaryschools. We also wished Mr David Merriman a very long and happy retirement ashe left at the end of term, having taught at Stepaside School for over 25 years.Following a competition that we ran in the summer term, we welcomed pupils backin September with a new set of class names. We have a well established ForestSchool programme and so our class names reflect our interest in minibeasts andwoodland creatures. Our Nursery Class are called Dosbarth Siani Flewog (caterpillar class) whilst MissTidd and her Reception and Year 1 pupils are called Dosbarth Pili Pala (butterflyclass). Dosbarth Cwningen (rabbit class) is the home of Mrs Owen and her Year 1and Year 2 pupils. We have Dosbarth Wiwer (squirrel class) for Year 3 pupils withMrs Blewitt and Mrs Hughes and Dosbarth Draenog (hedgehog class) for Year 4pupils with Mrs Chandler-Hall. The upper juniors have also been renamed and MrsBadham teaches Year 5 in Dosbarth Mochyn Daear (badger class) and Mr Adamsteaches Year 6 in Dosbarth Cadno (fox class). New pupils joined Mrs Waters and our Nursery class and have settled very quickly into their new routine. They are busy learning their nursery rhymes and have made some beautiful displays in their classroom. Eight pupils recently visited St Mary’s Church in Begelly.
