His artistic life has been dedicated to capturing the essence of the animal andconveying its beauty and personality in natural surroundings. Booth Western Art Museum is excited toannounce the exhibition of The Wildlife Art of Guy Coheleach, June 28 – October 7, 2018 in theTemporary Exhibition Gallery.Born in Baldwin, Long Island, Coheleach says, “I was a child of the depression and attended parochialschool. I had a habit of drawing in my notebooks and when the nuns caught me they would hit the back ofmy hand and make me take the notebooks home to have my parents sign them. I thought it waspunishment, but now I see they wanted my parents to see my ability to draw.”Coheleach graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in art in 1956. He attributes his success to “a lotof hard work.” Since 1991, his paintings have been in over 40 one-man retrospectives in major museumsfrom New York to Los Angeles and have been exhibited in the National Collection of Fine Art, the RoyalOntario Museum, the White House, Corcoron Gallery in Washington DC, the Norton Gallery, and theRoyal Museum. He has won many awards, both for his paintings and for his conservation efforts acrossthe globe. He has an honorary doctorate from William and Mary College and his endowment at theUniversity of Tennessee provides about six full scholarships to the School of Wildlife Management fordeserving students each year.He is the subject of two films, Guy Coheleach and the Bald Eagle and Quest: An Artist and His Prey,numerous magazine articles and the author of four books, including The African Lion As Maneaterpublished in 2004. In 1972, he was rundown by a charging elephant in Zambia. “This first-hand kind ofknowledge has made him one of the best wild animal painters in the world admired by both scientists andart critics,” said Pat Robertson, Sporting Classics writer.When asked what led him to focus on wildlife as a career, Guy said, “Like most young people I wasdistracted by all the usual things, like automobiles and girls, but I never lost my love and fascination withanimals. I went to the Museum of Natural History and the Bronx Zoo several times a week.”In 1966 he won the Winchester National Trap and Skeet Championship which took him to London andAfrica. Ever since, he has traveled extensively to gather visual reference material for his paintings,sometimes going to Africa as many as five times in a year. MORE
