Aurora and Esmeralda Mining 1860's Stock Certificate Collection

he Ken Prag Collection of early Esmeralda mining stock certificates is unparalleled. As one of the Tearliest gold/silver discoveries after the Comstock, prospectors found the district by panning gold in the ravines around what is today Bodie and Aurora. Gold at Monoville sparked area-wide excitement, and in came the prospectors. One of the first there in 1861 was a kid by the name of Sam Clemens who had come to Nevada to work with his brother as secretary to the Nevada Territorial Secretary, Orion Clemens. Not having any money to pay the young Clemens for Territorial duties in Carson City, Sam was off prospecting in 1861 – first at Aurora, then Unionville, and back to Aurora again in 1862. Clemens’ tales are well told in his book “Roughing It”, written under his new nom de plume “Mark Twain.” In our August 2018 Auction catalog, we told stories of Aurora and listed the mines that Clemens worked on or had a financial interest in.
