Four 4’s Math Challenge Can’t Stump SC StudentsHave your ever heard of The Four 4s? Well thanks to Mrs. Grose and her math trainingthrough OSU these 4th and 5th graders have and they successfully met the challenge andeven took the challenge one step further. The Four 4s Challenge is where students designequations that equal all whole numbers from 1-20 using exactly four 4s and ONLY four 4s.As you can imagine, some equations are much easier to find than others. After this group ofstudents completed the challenge they took it one step further and found equations fromthe numbers negative 1 to negative 20. Throughout the challenge students had to workwith fractions, decimals, exponents, order of operations, negative numbers, square rootsand factorials. Once the challenge was under way these students got excited aboutsucceeding and they weren’t giving up. Here is what the students had to say about their hard work and success: “It took us almost 2 weeks and 19 was hard because you had to use factorial. That’s an exclamation point.” ~Taylor Smith “I think it was pretty hard for the negatives but a little easy because all you had to do was think of the positives and try to figure out how to change it to a negative.” ~Bryan Chaffee “In the Four 4’s puzzle it was hard because we only got about 15 minutes a day to work on it. At first we thought to use the number 4 was impossible but we figured it out!” ~Jayla Tolliver “I think the negative Four 4’s challenge was easier because we had already done the positives and then we kind of had to convert it. The positive Four 4’s challenge was hard because it was only our 2nd challenge of the school year.” ~Dylan Allen “During the challenge we used factorial, which means you start with a number and go down. Like 5 times 4 times 3 times 2 times 1. We also had to use square root, which means you times it by itself to get the number you have, like the square root of 16 is 4.” ~Aaron Hauler Can you figure out this Math Challenge?TECHNOLOGY TIP: SC has a Symbaloo page http://www.symbaloo.com/mix/scelementary1 Chances are your child has used our school Symbaloo page many times this nine weeks, but have you? This is a great place to find ALL the quick tile links to the websites that your child uses regularly at SC. Find tiles for one click connections to our school webpage, AR Home Connect, Library catalog, Mrs. Lacey’s class, IXL, INFOhio, and many many more. Many websites that our students use require a personal log-in. If your student is unable to tell you their log-in information please contact their teacher. 4

A buddy bench is designed to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship.Students who are feeling left out or alone should take a seat on the buddy bench. Otherswho notice someone sitting alone on the bench should join them, strike up conversation, and ask them to play. The buddy bench helps to build a positive climate on the playground, ensure that all children feel included, and provide aneasy way for students to make new friends. Mrs. Bush’s art club is in the process of painting a second buddy bench for our playground. New 2nd grade student, Dashawna Clinton, made friends her first day at South Central with classmate, Sydnee Middaugh! 6

At Gorman Nature Center with 3rd Graders Moving the classroom outdoors for the day gave our 3rd graders a GREAT opportunity to take what they’ve learned and see it in action. At Gorman Nature Center students got to identify nature on a hike, get up close and personal with animals native to Ohio, and collect and observe pond life.HERE IS WHAT THE STUDENTS HAD TO SAY: “It was fun holding the snakebecause it wasn’t as slimy as other ones are.” ~Ethan Miller“The leaf I found was a Sassafras, and it smelled really good. I picked it upbecause it was the shape of Michigan and my brother lives there.” ~Zack Cross“I can’t believe I didn’t catch anything with my net.” ~Grant WallaceARTIST SPOTLIGHT Original Artwork by 3rd grader Chloe Beverly.Third graders recently discussed the three main bodyparts of an insect: head, thorax, and abdomen, andapplied them to create either realistic or creativeinsect drawings. Students drew only with Sharpiemarker and had to think of creative solutions if amistake was made. Once the drawings were complete, students used crayon and/or colored pencil andapplied a gradient technique (colors changing from oneto another) as well as tempera cake paint for either ablue sky or a sunset sky. As you can see in ChloeBeverly’s drawing, she chose to create a gradient oforange to yellow to green for her insect. Artists likeChloe did a great job!Starting Your Day with FREE Breakfast2nd graders, Eli Lacey, Alivia Resor, With funding from Children’s Hunger Alliance, our school isand Rylee Carsey start the morning able to provide a FREE breakfast each morning for studentsoff right with spelling and breakfast. in grades K-8. If you’ve never listened to a youngstudent read one of the Gerald and Piggie books you can’twait any longer. Check out a book by Mo Willems ASAP!You won’t be disappointed!! I’m never without an ebook on my Kindle! Borrowing ebooks from my public library is one of my favorite things to do!! This is how I preview books to see if I should purchase a hard copy for our school library. On my kindle APP right now you’ll find “MS.
