Hillcrest ''81'' Busy Bodies During first and second period the yearbook room was the noi- siest room in the whole school. Everyone tried jamming a quar- ter's work into the last day of the deadline. There was a lot of yell- ing, screaming, and typing; it also caused a real problem when pic- tures couldn't be found and lay- outs were lost. It always seemed quite hect1c, but all in all everyth- ing always turned out successful- ly. Each individual knew that he or she had to do the best job he or she could do - and we did it! The staff and the photographers were in the yearbook room for six hours on end (once in a while sneaking out for a few minutes for lunch or a coffee break). Like they always say, when the going gets rough, the rough get going, and that's just about the way it was around the last few last days of the deadline! Have you ever heard of trying to fit nearly fifty people into your bathroom? Well I guess that if you asked anyone on the yearbook staff they would say \"yes,\" simply because the yearbook room is just a little bit bigger than a bathroom; but with fifty people in there, you wouldn't know it. Oh well, it was a great year and something to look back on w1th pride. 1) Yearbook Staff, bottom to top, left to nght 1st row· Dave Lundberg, Morns Trane. Kayleen Hammer. Current Events 1980-81 Throughout the year of 1980 and into the year of 1981 , there were many traumatic, depressing, and exciting events. The most exciting was the United States having 52 hostages released from Iran. They began their reach for freedom on January 20 at 8:06 EST. The hos- tages were not allowed to take off until 12:33 p.m. The Iranians kept on delaying to get in their last insult to President Carter. While the dra- ma between Iran and the United States played its final scene, Presi- dent-elect Reagan was being inau- gurated. Iran's international con- flicts did not die. Iran was at war with Iraq. Both countries rich in oil and both were \" burning\". While everything was hot in Iran, the U.S. had a little heat of its own . Mt. St. Helens, the only active vol- cano in the U.S., erupted. Americans were also stunned with the tragic death of John Len- non (1940-1980). His life was so short. The accused murderer was David Mark Chapman- a fan of Lennon's. The motive remains un- known . Gas prices continued to rise with no halt in sight. When Reagan be- came President, he deregulated do- mestic oil prices. Americans had to pay another 10- 15¢ at the pumps. When will we run out of energy? At the same time, Russia was us- ing up a lot of energy but in the sense that we were. Instead, they were making war-type actions. First, they invaded Afganistan. Next, they made strategic moves towards Po- land . It seemed like Russia was shaking the world. The splurge of earth- quakes shook the world, too. The earthquakes in Italy, South Amer- ica, Turkey, China, and Greece crumbled buildings to the ground killing many people. The year of 1980-81 brought was full of fear, joy, caution, sadness, disaster and hope for all Americans. 250 I Current Events
