Contributing Writer As a senior citizen, mother of two, stepmother of two more, Pop me an email and tell me about grandmother of eight and — holy moly! — two great-grandchildren, the laughter in your life: Judy Stapleton has traveled many miles from her home stompin’ [email protected] grounds of Mississippi. After raising her kids, she spent 29 years working for the federal government before retiring. She now works as a receptionist for F&B Publications in Fayetteville. FREEDOM, Y'ALL Whenever we think about the Fourth of July, most Hard to believe, but that's me in the red dress with my son, of us think of the sacrifices of our military; picnics with Chris. It was a red, white and blue wedding. friends and family; and the colors red, white and blue. I married my second husband on July 4, 1996. Ha! There goes independence. I am still an independent person, but it is nice to have someone I can depend on and who can depend on me, too. When we decided to get married on July 4, it was because we were both off work and figured we would be off for every Fourth of July. Wrong! We spent maybe two anniversaries together, and then I worked for the next 16 years. I sure didn’t plan on a red, white and blue wedding either, but yup, you guessed it ... it happened. I did want to get married in my home, wearing a flamin’ red dress. And my son and daughter had to be there. Why red, you ask? Cause I look darn good in red, at least that’s what I tell myself. So, there we were with an all-out red, white and blue wedding. Flowers, cake, kids and husband were decked out in a combo of these three patriotic colors. Being an American and having an Army-retired husband, as well as a son and grandson on active duty, I look at July Fourth as a celebration of freedom and not something to theme a wedding after. It all just worked out that way. Let’s not forget our military family members and the spouses and kids holding down the homefront while our soldiers are away. I am so thankful to the ones who have served, still serve and those who gave their lives for our freedom. Enjoy our country’s Independence Day, and may God continue to bless America. Oh yeah ... Shout-out to my hubby of 23 years. Happy Anniversary, Darrell. I love you! JULY 2019 7

Eaton also enjoys assisting her husband and business partner, U.S. Airforce veteran Daniel Skidmore, as an assistant scientific diver with Force Blue and adventure-seeker with GoRuck. Spring Lake T he Spring Lake Outpost was inspired by a kayaking trip that my husband and I Outpost: took down the Broad River in Athens, Georgia, in June of 2017. We brought Community adventures on the Little River our dog and our little girl, my brother and his pregnant wife, and her siblings. We had such a great time hanging out and bonding on the water — no phones, detached from the rest of the world. My husband and I own a commercial property on Bragg Boulevard that sits on North Carolina’s Little River, and after that magical trip in Georgia, we contemplated accessing this river to offer the same family kayaking experience for families in the Fort Bragg Area. Two months of tree-clearing led to the soft opening of SLO on Labor Day weekend of 2017. The mission was to provide affordable adventures for our community and to encourage everyone to get outdoors, step outside comfort zones and maximize life experiences with family and friends. We are family-, kid- and pet-friendly, and we love meeting the new folks that venture into our river. Today, we host monthly kayaking events with food trucks, breweries, live music and field games. We encountered a temporary hiccup in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, when our commercial building was flooded with 5 1/2 feet of water. We had to completely rebuild the interior, but we accomplished this goal in 40 days. The Little River was also severely affected, and we are conducting daily efforts to restore and improve it. CHANTAL HIGH-SANTELLANO Chantal High-Santellano is a choreographer and dance instructor at Cumberland Dance Academy, as well as Choreographer and Dance Instructor, a registered dental hygienist. She is also certified in Cumberland Dance Academy progressive ballet techniques. During the summertime, www.cumberlanddanceacademy.com she travels to different studios and teaches workshops. Why you should never say ‘can’t’ I was not always a dancer. In fact, I didn’t start dancing until I was 15 years old. A few years later, anorexia took over my life — and stayed for four years. Unhealthy food rituals. Obsessive calorie-counting. Excessive daily workouts. The struggle of having the perfect dancer’s body and juggling uncontrollable stresses every day led to my hospitalization in 2004, at the age of 21. The human body is like a machine; it will only work if it is fueled. For four years, my body was overworked and under-fueled, and it finally started shutting down. My kidneys and liver had been declining in functionality for a while, and now my body had started to destroy its own blood cells, too. Doctors deliberated on how to treat this autoimmune disease, hemolytic anemia, that had developed as a result of my anorexia. They finally decided on steroid treatment. During this time, I came to rely on my faith. The ordeal left my muscles weak. I had to relearn motor functions and had no stamina. After a total of seven days on rigorous steroid treatment, my body stopped attacking its own blood cells. I was released 117 pounds heavier than when I arrived at the hospital. From there, it was a long road to recovery, learning to walk and eating a healthy number of calories, with the assistance of counselors and nutritionists. But the battle wasn’t over. Even with treatment, my body slowly continued to break down. Eventually, I had to be readmitted and have my spleen removed. At that point, even though I was already very limited in the area of dance, it had to be completely put on hold. Dance was my passion, so getting back into the studio was a priority. Because of this, I stopped using the word “can’t.” Simple things like standing up and walking were monumental tasks, so dancing would have seemed impossible if I hadn’t stopped using the word “can’t.” Later, when I successfully started teaching again, that mindset stayed with me. “Can’t” has become a curse word in my classes. It is important to me that every dancer understands that hard work and determination can help them achieve their goals, their “can.” 10 JULY 2019

Today, I have been blessed with so many “cans” that should have seemed impossible. I’ve gotten to work as a backup dancer on “The Voice” (2007), as a dancer in an independent film (“White Men Can’t Dance,” 2009) and as a choreographer and backup dancer for a Jasmine Rose concert in downtown Fayetteville’s Festival Park (2011). I’ve also had the opportunity to do lots of dance work in the community, like judging several local talent shows, hip-hop competitions and dance team auditions. I had fun choreographing for the NC Center for Economic Empowerment & Development’s Dancing with the Fayetteville Stars (2014, 2015, 2017); performing with other local dancers for the Fayetteville Heroes indoor football team (2010, 2013) and performing at the 104.5 Music Festival (2013); the International Folk Festival (2006) and the Dogwood Festival (1999, 2006). Finally, I’ve had the chance to continue being a student and take classes f rom inspiring choreographers such as Tessandra Chavez (“World of Dance”), Jamal Sims (“Step Up”), Codie Wiggins (“Pitch Perfect”), NappyTabs (“So You Think You Can Dance”), Martha Nichols (“The Greatest Showman”), Marty Kudelko (Justin Timberlake and NSync), Poppin Pete (The Electric Boogaloos crew), Rhapsody James (Beyoncé), Stacey Tookey (Céline Dion) and many others. My goal in this industry is to influence young kids in a positive, nurturing way by teaching self-confidence, security and life lessons. I also advocate for adopting healthy eating habits and thoroughly training your muscles for this athletic sport we call dance. I really started understanding how the body works and the way muscles work after getting sucked into that dark hole where I was never good enough. But the more I decided to share my skills, the more I started appreciating bodies and everything they can do and endure. I also realized I wasn’t alone and that many people suffered from the same negative mindset as me. I understood that I had a purpose to uplift the people around me. In my job working with young dancers, I get to be God’s hands and feet. JULY 2019 11

ummertime offers pet owners plenty of SPaawfsefotry opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities with their four-footed friends, like hiking, tshuims mer Sswimming, road trips or taking leisurely SPONSORED BY walks about town. At the same time, summer is probably one of the most hazardous MIKE KARAMAN seasons for dogs. Many owners are simply unaware of the risks these activities can pose to their pets. JULY 2019 21 People take their dogs with them to run errands and leave them in the car. It only takes a few minutes for a car’s interior to heat up to 120 F. It’s amazing how many dogs are left inside hot cars and succumb to hyperthermia. It’s not just cars that can be a hazard. Owners who run with their dogs in the hot sun without cooling them down need to be equally aware of the risks. Once a dog goes into heatstroke, it is tough — sometimes impossible — to bring him out of it. The same problem can occur doing ordinary things like shopping, running errands or taking a leisurely stroll. The sun is capable of burning surfaces, including the bottoms of our dogs’ paws, just like it can burn our skin when we don’t apply protection. Our dogs don't live in the wild. They live with us in air- conditioned homes, lounging on sofas and sleeping in beds. Their paw-pads are soft and smooth, similar to the bottoms of our own feet, and their pads get burned the same way our feet do. If you can’t press the palm of your hand on the ground for at least 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet. Consider booties for your dog when outside. Some booties use a breathable material for the upper portion and reflective material on the sole that draws heat away from the paw. Then there’s water. Cooling as it may be, water — whether it’s in a swimming pool or the ocean — brings its own set of issues. The thing about dogs and swimming is that dogs don’t always know their limitations, and not all dogs can swim. Chlorine and salt are harsh to their skin and coats. Often, even controlled environments like pools, or calm bodies of water like lakes or marinas, are no safer than the ocean. More than 5,000 dogs die annually in these environments, many by inadvertently falling in unnoticed. The number may be far higher since these deaths often go unreported. There are many doggie flotation devices that are rugged and stylish, designed with vibrant colors and reflective piping for easy identification. Nighttime concerns often stem from visibility issues. Consider using LED and reflective collars and leashes, which are bright and bold in the sunlight and highly visible at night. There are also products available that feature a small LED light you can attach to your dog’s favorite collar. Now that summer is here, please don’t forget that you are ultimately responsible for the safety and w21ellJ-UbLYein20g1o9f your pet.
