Inspiring change for a safer communityfor all through youth action: @Chat_boxes : chatterboxes

Chatterbox NEWSWe have had a busy few months delivering lots of awareness workshopsand running pop up projects in the community. We have been running a “Everyone is Different” project with BournemouthYouth Service which has been lots of fun. We looked at what makes usall different and then decided to run a event to celebrateeveryone’s unique qualities. Our pop up event was inBoscombe where we ran lots of different activities. We gotmembers of the public to draw self portraits and stickthem all over our 3D letters which was brilliant fun.We have also been involved in a consultationabout Transitions with Access Dorset, looking at what works and what supportwe might need in. We focused onindependent travel, accommodation, employment in thefuture and how we getinformation. Itwas a reallyinterestingproject.Recentlywe were alsoinvolved indelivering workshopsabout discrimination, diversity and equality to youngpeople who were on the NCS(National Citizens Service) program.Throughout the two days, we worked withover 200 young people aged 15-18 years old.We ran lots of activities which focused on differenttypes of discrimination, hate crimes and discussed theUK Laws about the Equality Act 2010.We helped them learnand understand things whilst having fun along the way. Therewere lots of discussions about stereotypes and what makes people different. Feedback from young people who took part in our workshops included:• “It gave me a totally • “WOW. • “AMAZING.different outlook It was Would love to get involved on life”. wonderful” in the future”.

Bonjour. I am Molly and I am the funniest and youngest Chatterbox member!. Since I joined the project, I have met lots of new people who are now hilarious friends and I have lots of fun with them. At Chatterboxes my role is to make everybody laugh and I take this very seriously. Recently I won the Parry Award at my school’s achievement event because I am hard working and I am really confident. It made me feel so proud, I nearly cried. I have the trophy in my room to look at everyday and I even got a £10 voucher. I like volunteering because it makes me feel warm inside. Recently I helped out at Quad Kids which is an athletics club at my school. It gave me lots of experience helping kids in year 3-6 and I even featured in our school newsletter. Sadly at school I don’t have many friends so it’s really good to have lots of friends outside of school. In my first two years of Secondary school, older people in the school use to tease me and I got cyber bullied which was really hard but I now know that it is important to report any bullying to a teacher. I did and now I am really confident and laugh A LOT. I always think of the Beatle’s song; “Let It Be”. Its a motivational song and inspires me, making me smile everyday and fills my life with happiness.

BULLYING AND HATE CRIMES Within The Chatterbox Project we have been going out and about to delivery awareness workshops to young people about disabilities, equality, diversity and hate crime. What is a hate crime? It is an act of violence or hostilitydirected at people because of who they are or who someone thinks they are.Something is a hate incident if the victimor anyone else thinks it was motivated byhostility or prejudice based on one of the following things:• Disability • Transgender identity Only• Race • Sexual orientation 1 in 4• Religion students report bullyingExamples of hate incidents every year. are: The main reason people• Verbal abuse • Abusive phone or text are bullied is because• Bullying or messages, of the way they look. Intimidation • Online abuse• Physical attacksIf you are being bullied, don’t ignore it or fight back. Report it to ateacher or someone you are close to like a family member or to the Police. Dorset Police have created a App where you can report a crime or find out more about what a hate crime is and how to keep safe. Go to your App store and type in “Hate Crime 2”.

For the last few months we have been involved in a Citizens Journalism project with Bournemouth University and Access Dorset called “Access to the Future” which has focused on using creative art to communicate what life is like living with a disability in Dorset. The project was so much fun and we learned how to create films, edit them and realized Bournemouth University is massive. Several of us made a film called #judgeyface which looked at people’s reactions to disabilities sometimes. Some other members made a film about the University and how huge it was. VBlogswere also created about life with Asperger Syndrome and these were all shown at a showcase evening at the University. “I totally loved this project. It was intriguing to see such different types of talents and meet new people with different disabilities. I wish that project’s like this could happen more often so everyone can see that people with a disability are amazingly talented”. By Michelle “I believe this intensely, fabulous project is one of the BEST things I have donethis year. It has taught me to be so much more creative and being involved hasalso shown me that coming together as a friendly group to celebrate our different styles is also very important for young people”.
