Six Represented Us At U.S.U. In June of 1982, six seniors represented Jordan in a week-long political conference sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. Boy's and Girl's State was a program designed to teach youth about the governmental system and encourage them to use what they learned in service of the community. Representatives were chosen by personal interview, with emphasis on speaking experience, active involvement in school, and overall attitudes toward our government. The week was characterized by guest speakers, elections, political caucuses, council meetings, more elections, campaigning, friendships, all night poster parties, toga parties, more elections, wins, losses, and graduation with a stronger love of our flag and the United Stales. Boy's State was held at USU in Logan, and Girl's State was held as SUSC in Cedar City.Honors Society . . .Mostly Fun Girl's State Citizens; Carolyn Hardcastle, state dele- gate and party candidate; Robin Havens, state dele- 9ate and county clerk; LeeAnn Muir, county and State delegate. For Women Only January tenth was the beginning of a week for girls to do the things which only girls could do. On Monday every freshman girl was assigned a senior girl for a \"big pal.\" Not knowing what to expect, both pals exchanged phone numbers and other vital information, then plunged head- long into a week of fun. Tuesday was the initiation day. Sometime between the hours of three and six a.m., dazed seniors pulled themselves out of their warm beds in an attempt to drag their little pals from the same atmosphere. By the crack of dawn, they were out in full force preparing to sproing upon their little pals the devious plans they stayed up all night trying to think of. After a day of craziness was the \"best dress\" day for girls. Obviously this was the most enjoyable day for the male diggers, and they bestowed their appreciation upon their female counterparts as gentlemenly as possible. Thurs day was get even d ay . Last, but certainly not least, was the spectacular of the week, standing room only: the Junior Mister Junior Pageant. With Vivian Cline, Mrs. Utah America 1982 as MC, seven enthusiastic males valiantly fought for the title through swimsuit, talent and general appearance competitions. The votes were tallied and (drum roll) John Burger reigned as king with Greg Dorius as first runner up. Girls Week was one of the most hectic and hair-raising weeks, but the experience gained by the freshman was a welcome they'd been waiting for and a special friendship to always remember. Parent Organizations Encourc:a.ge 'Diggers Three years· ago, while watching a wrestling match, a group of parents decided to work together to help earn money for a new mat. The school agreed to pay half if the club could fund the other half. Since then, membership has grown to include many parents, alumni, and even coaches. The year's biggest accomplishment was the new press box. The club used wrestling tournaments, raffles, breakfasts, and program sales for fund raisers. Since they started They've earned $10,CXX>.OO of which $4,CXX>.OO was earned this year. The Parent Teacher Association of Jordan High prefered to be called the Parent Teacher Student Association. The goal of the PTSA was to the strengthen the length of chain from students to the home and from teachers to the students. Working under the direction of Mr. Ash, the PTSA provided a large amount of funds for senior scholarships this year and helped serve the community in any way possible. Talented Administrators Support JordanMR. MC CLEARY Mr. Ash's JOb as principal of Jordan High can be summed up in one concept: the support system. He likes being able to have some jurisdiction in the policies of our school and enjoys supervising our teachers. \"However,\" he states, ''I'd rather be a teacher. That's where the rewa.rds are.\" Mr. Ash is proud of Jordan and the spirit our students possess. He feels there is more to a school than a successful football team or new facilities. \"A building doesn't make a school.\" he adds. \"Jordan is made great just from the studentbody.\" Why would someone like Mr. McCleary, who builds his own house, his own boat, and likes to participate in sports, go into education as a career? \"I like kids,\" he replies. Indeed he must - he has a family of five' Part of his responsibility as vice-principal is the school's sports program. Mr. McCleary feels very good about Jordan's sports and says it is preparing students for all other aspects of life. He has previously worked in two other schools, but feels that Jordan has a more cooperative situation between students and teachers. one that he seems pleased to participate in. The newest addition to our administration, Mr. Weber, has previously worked as a teacher, coach. teacher specialist, and the assistant principal for Oquirrh Hills Middle School. Some students remember him as an elementary teacher at East Sandy. After a day at school. which includes deahng with truancies, the SBO's, and school activities, he enjoys photography and traveling, and has traveled to every country m Europe as well as every state except Alaska and Hawaii. Sandy's Growth Continued Thts year, Sandy's growth continued unabated with new addihons, expansions, and improvements made to Sandy's businesses. Along the entertainment line, we really dtd well, with places like Peter Piper Pizza, Me N' Willey's, Whtrlyball, Classic Roller Skating and Water Slides, or the Hydro-tube, all of which were exciting places around Sandy that you could have made a nice evening or Saturday of. without spending much money or traveling too far. However, all of Sandy's growth was not JUS! fun and games. There's an Allied store in the Sandy Mall where Safeway used to be, and a fabric store m the old Albertson's building. In the line of busmess addlitons, the Sandy Mall completed a major landscaping and facelift project designed to give it more artistic conhnuily and asthelic appeal. and the growth of Deseret Pharmaceuhcal. one of Sandy's largest employers, was reflected m the completion of the new office wing in front of thetr building. All things constdered, the new development of Sandy's already large business and recreahon community is a reflection of the continuing expanston of one of the nation's fastest growing cities. The Shutter Stops GUY HENDRICKSEN100 CAROLYN HARDCASTLE MATHEW GUSS

DOUG MOORE Here To stand in the middle of a silentKEVIN STAY gymnasium with your shutter clicking as LINCOLN PAXMAN loudly as a machine gun is to know the pride of being a photographer. To attempt to photograph a faculty member who does not particularly wish to have his picture preserved for posterity is to know the ease of being a photographer. To work with a print for three$*@#! hours only to have your best friend tum on the darkroom light is to know the joy of being a photographer. To capture the reflection of a mountain lake or the mood of a city at 3:00 a.m. is to know the rare creative thrill of being a photographer. You've probably seen him around the halls trying to catch meager portions of school spirit, seeing life through a camera lens while wandering in and out of reality, and snagging you the day after you got your perm. If not for him we could do whatever we wanted whenever we felt like it. He always seems to be there at the wrong time. Unfortunately by the same token, if not for him our moments would die as soon as they were born. Photography is an art indeed, the purest form . Whereas the painter or sculptor renders as his mind interprets, the photographer interprets for other minds to render. For all the interminable roasting hot, freezing cold, soaking wet hours of pleasure he endures, those who enjoy his work owe him at least an enduring toleration. Photographers/ 187

LEFT: A spect.,cle of surpnse: The traditiond! burning of the 1, enh\"\"ced by fireworks, closed Homeoommg week w1th \" ~g. Without exception Jordanites spent a lot of their time m anticipation of these memory making events. Wouldn't 1t be terrific if we could stop time and examine our past, to really see the forceful impact these Beetdigger years have had on our lives? The classes and experiences we had are what we made of them and if we didn't put forth the effort now, will we regret it later? Although threats of condemning our building have been in the making for a decade, we realize that we don't need a new school with a carpeted cafeteria, televisions in every classroom and air-conditioning, because we know that a school is only a building unless it can bring to its students the desire to make something of themselves, to do the best they can do. Hard times and criticism through the years weren't able to muffle the spirit and unity of Jordan, and the students who walk the halls of this old school must undoubtedly take the credit. Standing behind our teams, supporting our organizations, and wanting to win was our deepest desire, but if they didn't succeed we still had faith in them, we still loved them, and still the beet goes on. For some this year was a beginning, for others a conclusion, but for all students past and present the friends, teachers, events and places will linger with us for years to come. In fact one cannot argue that the memories will flood back wave, upon wave, upon wave. You'll remember your own personal victories and losses, your sorrows and your JOys. You'll remember that one special teacher who spent so much lime trymg to convince you that it was better to be a studious student than to spend all your time watching M*A*S*H reruns, and you'll be glad he was your teacher. Even though we are the leaders of tomorrow, we were also the leaders of today. The freshmen of this year will be the leaders in three years. They have the responsibility of teaching their new freshmen the traditions here so when those freshmen become seniors, they will be able to do the same. We've got to show others what keeps us going, what gives us pride, and what makes Jordan High the school it is. Jordan has succeeded. We're proud of our school· steeped in tradition. We're proud to be Beetdiggers, to carry the pride and spirit of many of our ancestors on to the generations before us. We have abounding loyalty, we have that special spirit, and yes: We've Got the Beet. Though these pages become yellowed and tattered with time, we'll look back on this school year and it will be memories of laughter and tears of fun· filled days that come once in a lifetime.
