Event RecapPeople often struggle with making new friends in a new 4school… however, the 477 Event, which went on for the last few weeks, was a compatibility event where students from Grade six to twelve in Uptown had a chance to fill out a form to get matched with someone they're compatible with. We had some amazing results, the students really enjoyed doing this and found great compatible friends to make some memories with. Remember, it’s always great to 7have similar tastes to your friends!
Dear DAKOTA I’m pretty sure all of us know what it's like to have a burning question, or to feel have felt absolutely clueless in the face of an adversary during at least one point in our lives. Sometimes, it feels like no article on the internet can help us, or it may seem too difficult, or scary, to approach somebody about what we’re going through. We may cover and hide away, pushing the questions down so deep that they never get answered. That’s why I’m here, to answer all your questions as best I can. Oh, and don’t worry, any questions you ask me, your identity will be our secret. - Dakota
Dear DAKOTA Dear Dakota, how do I ignore everyones negative comments? Dear Friend, I understand how you feel. I know how it feels to be constantly seeking praise or approval. I know how crushing it feels if someone even shows the tiniest bit of disdain towards your character. It makes you feel ashamed doesn’t it? Makes you wonder what you’ve done wrong. And sometimes, these thoughts can keep you up at night. It's awful, I know. But, there is a way to stop caring so much, as there is for every problem. All you need is a will. Dear Dakota, how can I stay positive when it seems like everything around me is so bleak? I live by these 4 words “This too, shall pass”. I find that it helps with almost any unideal situation you may find yourself in. Stub your toe? It’ll pass. Your guinea pig died? It’ll pass. Bummed over a bad grade? It’ll pass. After all nothing lasts forever. While that simple phrase is often looked down utfpon for having negative connotations, if you look at it from a different perspective, it can actually be a phrase that means something good for a change. Nothing lasts forever,.

PPrreemmiieerr LLeeaagguuee Football has been the big talk of Uptown these past few months. Starting from the eventful and extremely memorable World Cup, with Argentina’s well-deserved victory, to now the surprising and greatly anticipated Premier League. If you’re not catching up with the latest sport news, and don’t know a thing about the pPremier lLeague, no worries we got you! The English Premier League has taken the world by storm, becoming one of the most popular football leagues in the world, with millions thousands of followers and a plethora of talented players. As many of us are aware, UIS has a significant football fan base due to the various interests and viewpoints of students and teachers. The Premier League is the highest tier of the English football league system for men. It is contested by 20 clubs and runs on a promotion and relegation program similar to the English Football League. Typically, seasons last from August to May, with each club playing 38 games. Some of our favorite teachers at UIS enjoy the Premier League as well; we bet you’d love to know which club they support! Let’s start off with Mr. Wright, who’s well known at UIS for being a great fan of the sport. Mr. Wright supports the team Liverpool FC since he ‘has supported LFC” his ‘entire life,’ as he had ‘lived in Liverpool for 9 years and was once a Season Ticket Holder’. Accordingly, he feels that Liverpool had a mediocre season that was significantly poorer than the previous one due to the team's notable injury crisis. They were exhausted, physically and mentally; struggling to adjust to the strategies of other teams. It's been a frustrating year so far, and it appears like they'll be focused on damaged limits for the rest of the season in order to qualify for Champions League football next season.
Conversely,While Mr. Matthew supports Newcastle United. He believes Newcastle United is having their strongest season in 20 years; they have played 20 games and are third in the rankings, barely behind Arsenal and Manchester City. Newcastle United have only been defeated once this season by Liverpool FC. The team are hopeful of a Champions League spot for next season with 18 games remaining in the current season. Newcastle will have qualified for European football for the first time in 20 years. Let's hope they have a successful run to finish this season. It’s not only our amazing PHE teachers who enjoy football, but those from other subjects have their great opinions as well. Our representative from the math department, Mr. Joseph, expressed his somewhat support towards Tottenham Hotspur, although he was unimpressed with their records. Mr. Joseph shared his opinions on the overall idea of supporting the team ‘you would usually just support the team of the place you come from or live in, these days everyone’s supporting the teams that win, like aArsenal, I would never support aArsenal!’ Quite controversial, don’t you think? Mr.Joseph should watch out in case any aArsenal fans read this! Other teachers like Mr. McMahon don’t have a favorite premier league team and prefer other leagues instead. In this case, Mr. McMahon supports a team in the Scottish Premier League called the Celtic. The team has been on top of the charts this season ever since their new manager, Ange Postecoglou, joined.

WHAT ?IS Y2K Y2K, shorthand for ‘the year 2000,’ is used to refer to the return of certain fashion trends making a comeback from the earlier part of that decade, to today. This time however, with a 2020s flair, though the underlying aesthetic remains the same; bright pink colors, wide legged and low rise jeans, tube tops, baby tees and velour tracksuits. Some of the biggest influences within this era include celebrities and supermodels such as Kate Moss and Britney Spears, along with the rise of the magazine and tabloid industry around this time - some notable mentions being Teen Vogue and Vanity fair. But that doesn’t explain why this trend is making such a big comeback out of all other trends from earlier this century. Well, one of the largest biggest contributing factors in the revival comeback of this style trend is the emergence of short-form content on TikTok, streamlining the process that trends have to go to in order to reach a wider audience. Because of this, audiences can be exposed to hundreds of fashionable trends in a short span of time, increasing the likelihood that they will find one that appeals to their personal taste. Combine this with an uber-personalized algorithm that filters media to your specific taste, and you’ve got the perfect climate for trends and fast-fashion to thrive. But why this trend specifically? The Y2K trend appeals so well to younger audiences because of its affinity with the maximalism era that’s been taking the internet by storm. After the early 2010s obsession with minimalism and peak- efficiency spaces, popularized by the interior design choices of major celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, it's understandable that the 2020s will see an up-tick in more cluttered styles as a reprieve from years of what some people may consider characterless design. It gives people an outlet to express themselves, with its bright colors and love for accessories, it’s no surprise that Y2K appeals to so many people. Another reason teenagers and older gen Zs may resonate with this trend particularly is because the rise in popularity within the thrifting and vintage resale market allows for the perfect environment for people to be exposed to more vintage pieces, and high supply increases demand. Because these pieces are experiencing a sudden surge in popularity, more people are seeing them on their timelines and personalized algorithms, causing them to want them more - further promoting the thrifting market and continuing the cycle. And why not be excited for this? Since fast fashion has been a major contributing factor towards global emissions, especially after the rise of social media, it's amazing to see a movement which discourages its use in a way that's still trendy and personalisable.
Y2KTMAABGLOAIZDISNIENS2A0N00DS Fashion magazines were a large part of the culture in the early and Y2KY2YK2KY2Y mid 2000s, especially before the era of digital commercialization and Y2K Y2K Y2 the internet, due to the fact that they allowed for the diffusion of Y2K Y2K Y2 styles and influences across a population far faster than was ever Y2K Y2K Y2 available before. Think of them as an early form of Instagram - people Y2K Y2K Y2 saw their favorite influencers and celebrities in these magazines Y2K Y2K Y2 wearing something unique, and suddenly, they want it too. While YY22KKYY22KKYY22 some form of fashion magazines has existed in the United States since Y2K Y2K Y2 the 1860s, the rise of the paparazzi meant magazines in this era were Y2K Y2K Y2 a large contributing factor in the emergence of ‘celebrity culture’ at Y2K Y2K Y2 the time, due to their inclusion of a ‘celeb gossip column.’ For the first Y2K Y2K Y2K time, people could see into the private lives of their favorite celebrities Y2K Y2K Y2K Y and hold them accountable for the things they did. While this could Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K sometimes escalate into a blatant invasion of privacy due to the Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K competitiveness of the paparazzi, it did aid in the humanization of Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y many of these celebrities, and allowed for the public to see them less Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K as a paragon of grace and beauty, and more of what they really are - Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y people. Just like the rest of us. Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2 YY22KK YY22KK YY22KK YY22KK YY22KK YY22KK YY22KK Magazines such as teen vogue and cosmopolitan, being aimed at YYYYYYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYYKYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYYKYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYYKYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYYKYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYYKYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYYKYYY22222Y22K2KKKKKK2KYYYYY younger audiences, exposed an entire generation of predominantly Y2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK2YK teenage girls to a constant stream of information in an era before the Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K internet, this meant that there was no basis for fact-checking and Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y much of the online and social etiquette that has been developed Y2K Y2K Y2K Y2K Y nowadays had not yet been established. Because of this, people had no Y2K Y2K Y2K way of knowing whether information was true or not. And, more Y2K Y2K Y importantly, they had not been taught that they had to. This meant that the perpetuation of lies or less-than reliable gossip was bound to Y2K Y occur. However, as more and more of these lies were debunked, Y2K people started to catch on and entire magazines were dedicated to the Y purpose of fact-checking the gossip shown in popular magazines. These skills were then able to be transferred to the online forums that gained popularity later on in the 2000s.

When interviewing Miss Kondas, as an interviewer and a past student of hers, I was able to get a really good insight into what this design teacher likes to read and listen to (all on the themes of the 2000’s of course!). As a working woman, busy creating lesson plans and trying to make Uptown’s design classes as engaging as possible, Miss Kondas doesn’t have much time to read, which is truly unfortunate as she says it's something she really enjoys. But if you keep reading, you’ll find out what she is currently reading, which might interest you particularly if you are a design student, as well as her top three songs from her 17-hour playlist titled, “Do you know the lyrics?”. Miss. Kondas mentioned that, as a busy woman, she’s unable to find time to read for leisure and truly enjoy what she’s reading, but she is enrolled in multiple courses that give her education/subject-based reading material that her “neurospicy” brain enjoys and thinks that you might enjoy too. Whilst they aren’t considered normal books, Kondas enjoys reading the blogs, journals, and first aid guides that come with the subject specific reading- however, as the design world trends change so often, by the time the works became books, that trend is history!
The course she’s signed up for is all about energy and carbon, to tie in with the new curriculum of design engineering and construction, stemming from the angle of how to make more sustainable buildings- talking about ways to reduce our carbon footprints and using newer technologies to sustain energy, with the way we conserve in our modern lifestyles. The material can be used by everyone and honestly would help give tips on how you can live more sustainably, whether that is by buying house plants and keeping them alive for steady O2 production, or just researching more on how to cut our carbon footprint. The grade 9’s specifically will be working on the new design course relating to this material, so the information from these sites is not only beneficial for their knowledge, but perhaps even for their grades. Miss Kondas is reading books that have been gifted to her by students, the name can’t be remembered unfortunately, but onto the music. When recording this part of the interview, it took us approximately 5 to 10 minutes for Miss Kondas to decide what music from her 17-hour playlist would be put in the top 3 or top 5. When the indecisiveness took over, I had to beg and plead for it to be just top 3 tracks, and while they’re not in order, they are just tracks that Miss Kondas enjoys and would pull out at any gathering where she has control of the AUX. In her friend group, Miss Kondas is the “playlist person”, always ready to pull out any jams at all times. She did ask me to mention that this is not the “be all, end all” of her music taste, and that she has a wide variety of music that she enjoys and frequently listens to.
The first of the three tracks that was chosen was “Let me Love You” by Mario. This track has a lot of significance to the Millennials out there and there is a lot of nostalgia behind them; Miss Kondas says that all the Millennial kings and queens would see the “graffiti” when the song began to play and that it was a classic. There were originally two other tracks but upon further discussion were decided against for the second and third place tracks of the 2000’s Hits from Miss Kondas’s playlist, with the new songs being “When I see U” by Fantasia and Nas’ “Made you look”. These are all fantastic songs and, from my new experience with them, are very good tunes to jam out to or just listen to when you have a little bit of free time.

We interviewed the I&S department on their personal music and book recommendations – sticking to the 2000’s theme of course! The teachers were kind enough to share a glimpse into their playlists with us and give us their top tunes and reads for the month – and here are their responses! Mrs. Cheshire: In regards to music, talking about the songs that she listens to, Mrs. Cheshire says that “Where is the love?” by the Black Eyed Peas is a song that she really enjoys. This is because the lyrics of the song talk about racism, the importance of getting rid of it, and how we need to stop it. From the books that she’s read, Mrs. Cheshire Mr. Davenport: recommends reading “A People’s Tragedy: The Russian After putting a lot of thought into his answers, Mr. Revolution, 1891-1924” by Orlando Figes.
