The Noble false widow Steatoda nobilis: A new kid on the block. Dr John P Dunbar Dr Michel M Dugon Venom System Lab, School of Natural Sciences, National University of Ireland Galway. Ireland may not be renowned for its venomous fauna, yet over 380 species of spiders live on the island, and all of them rely on their fangs and venom to capture prey and defend themselves against small predators. About a dozen species are probably capable of piercing the human skin and inject venom. Among those, we find the extremely fast but docile house spider Eratigena atrica, the rarely seen bog-loving raft spider Dolomedes fimbriatus, the woodlouse spider Dysdera crocata, which bears oversized fangs to impale woodlice, or the black velvet laceweb spider Amaurobius ferox. Yet, bites from all these species are rare, and result only in moderate transient pain. Only the Noble false widow Steatoda nobilis, is capable of inflicting medically significant bites, and as such, it is definitely Ireland’s most venomous spider. Noble false widow feeding on a wasp courtesy of Dr J P Dunbar Female Noble False widow spider courtesy of Dr J P Dunbar The Noble false widow is a medium size spider, reaching about 35mm in legspan, bearing reddish brown legs and a glossy black These symptoms are all quite typical of latrodectism, the systemic body with a variable, intricate white design on the dorsal aspect neurological syndrome resulting from envenomations by the “true” of their bulbous abdomen. Mature males have a smaller abdomen black widows of the genus Latrodectus. In fact, our recent research than females, and longer legs, a morphology more suitable to their showed that the venom of Steatoda nobilis contains the same main vagrant lifestyle, as they are constantly looking for females to mate neurotoxins as Latrodectus, including the very potent α-latrotoxins, with. -latroinsectotoxins and latrodectins. In addition, our lab-based The Noble false widow originates from the Canaries, Madeira and investigations showed that Steatoda nobilis can carry and vector the Azores, and was first spotted in the United Kingdom at the end of a range of pathogenic bacteria when biting, including antibiotic the nineteen century, when Victorian Britain started importing large resistant strains, and this is supported by clinical observations. quantities of bananas from the Macaronesian Islands. In most instances, symptoms are moderate and localised, ranging from mild pain with limited erythema, to swelling and intense pain persisting for several days.
