["transmitted coded impulses by satellite to Canada, where they activated a laser beam that “re-created” the Olympic flame. 3 Before the 1956 Melbourne Games, a group of Australian students pulled off the greatest hoax in torch relay history. They fashioned a torch out of a plum pudding can, part of a chair leg and a pair of underpants set aflame. Then one of them joined the relay route, presented the contraption to the mayor of Sydney and slipped into the crowd before anyone realized he was an impostor. 4 The torch was transported under water at the Great Barrier Reef before the 2000 Sydney Games. The specially designed solid-fuel torch operated like a distress flare. 5 The identity of the final torch bearer, who lights the caldron, is kept secret until the opening ceremonies. At the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, many thought Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci would be chosen because her nation was the only East Bloc member that didn’t boycott the event. But U.S. Olympic hero Rafer Johnson won out. Far less attention was paid to the man who later doused the flame. Gas company worker Marv Wig, 59, put it this way: “There are two switches that both essentially cut the fuel to the flame. I haven’t decided which one I’ll flip. One needs to build a little suspense.” 6 Critics complained that the red-and-yellow caldron at the 1996 Atlanta Games resembled the french-fry containers used by McDonald’s, an Olympic sponsor. 7 Antonio Rebollo, a disabled archer who shot a flaming arrow to light the caldron at the 1992 Barcelona Games, complained days later that he wasn’t given tickets to any competitions, not even archery. A local Olympic committee spokesman responded that Rebollo had been sent a thank-you letter and, “I can only assume he hasn’t gotten the letter yet.” 8 Olympic officials always keep an extra “pure” flame on standby in case a torch goes out. During the 1976 Montreal Olympics, a downpour doused the flame, and an official relit it with a cigarette lighter. Olympic","purists were appalled. They extinguished the unclean flame and relit it the proper way. 9 Yoshinori Sakai, the torch relay runner who lit the caldron for the 1964 Tokyo Games, was born near Hiroshima two hours after the atomic bomb was dropped there. 10 As Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu said, “A journey of 1,000 miles must begin with a single step.” For the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, the journey created one heck of a carbon footprint. According to calculations by wired.com, the Air China A330 jet transporting the Olympic torch burned 462,400 gallons of jet fuel, emitting 11 million pounds of carbon dioxide. Let the Games begin, if only for the sake of the environment. 10 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT RUNNING 1 The verb “run” has 645 meanings, more than any other word in the Oxford English Dictionary. In addition to putting one foot in front of the other rapidly, there’s “running an idea up the flagpole,” “the days running into weeks,” “running the numbers,” “running a fever,” “running with the wrong crowd” and “running your mouth.” When early 20th century Australians said they were “running the rabbit,” that meant they were bringing home liquor. 2 A cheetah runs faster than a sand gazelle, which is speedier than a zebra, which is faster than a kangaroo, which outruns a human, which can outleg a rhino. (This is based on estimated maximum running speeds; do not try at your local zoo.) 3 Dr. Gabe Mirkin, author of “The Sports Medicine Book,” asked more than 100 elite runners if they would be willing to take a magic pill that","would make them an Olympic champion but would kill them within a year. More than half said yes. 4 The Chicago marathon was called the Mayor Daley Marathon in its first two years. Its first running in 1977 got off to a rocky start: Three people were sent to the hospital with powder burns when the starter’s cannon misfired. 5 “Freak races” were a favorite form of entertainment in 17th and 18th century England. In one race witnessed by the king, two runners were evenly matched: Each had a wooden leg. In another race, a man on stilts faced off against an accomplished runner on foot. In yet another contest, a man was given an hour to run seven miles while carrying 56 pounds of fish on his head. 6 Haitian runner Dieudonne Lamothe was 78th—the final finisher—in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics marathon. And it’s a good thing for Lamothe that he finished. He later revealed that dictator “Baby Doc” Duvalier’s henchman had threatened to kill him if he did not complete the race. 7 Until 1950, a major league baseball player who was on base could be replaced by a “courtesy runner” without having to leave the lineup. In modern times, a pinch runner is allowed, but the player being replaced is out of the game for good. Perhaps the most unusual pinch runner was Oakland’s Herb Washington, who played in 105 games over two seasons in the 1970s and never came to bat or played the field. A track star, Washington was strictly a pinch-runner. 8 Two great American runners overcame potentially crippling illnesses. Sprinter Gail Devers suffered from Graves’ disease, and doctors were close to amputating her feet before her condition improved and she went on to win Olympic gold in 1992. Decades earlier, sprinter Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three track-and-field gold medals in a single Olympics—a glorious fate for a woman who was sickly as a child and wore a leg brace. “My doctor told me I would never walk again. My mother told me I would,” said Rudolph. “I believed my mother.”","9 Ron Paul, the former 12-term congressman and frequent presidential candidate, likes to run. He has run for political office for most of the last four decades, and as a high school junior in Pennsylvania, he raced to a state title in the 220-yard dash. 10 University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman was trying to develop a new athletic shoe, and one day in 1971 he used the family’s waffle iron to meld urethane into a wafflelike tread pattern. The idea caught on for the company he started with Phil Knight. First known as Blue Ribbon Sports, it was renamed Nike. Today, a life-size statue of Bowerman at the university stands on a base of waffle irons. * The Hall of Famers at Wrigley on Oct. 1, 1932, included the Yankees’ Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Red Rufflng, Bill Dickey, Earle Combs, Tony Lazzeri, Herb Pennock, Joe Sewell and manager Joe McCarthy; the Cubs’ Gabby Hartnett, Burleigh Grimes, Billy Herman and Kiki Cuyler; and umpire Bill Klem.","SOURCES CHAPTER 1: Oddities & Oddballs Conspiracy Theories “Conspiracy Films” by Barna William Donovan; “Religion of Fear” by Jason C.
