17. STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION NEWS ChESA Club The Chemical Engineering Student’s Association, ChESA is an association by the students and for the students of the Chemical Engineering Department. It was established in the year 1996. The basic aim of the association is to foster and maintain networking among fellow students and alumni through technical and social events on continual basis. It had organized such events like Chem-Fusion 2.0 and various webinars with the alumni which provided the platform for students to develop their technical as well as organizational skills. These events were managed successfully by the senior and junior board members of the association. IIChE Student Chapter, Nirma University The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, IIChE is a national level organization for chemical engineers. In Nirma University, it was inaugurated on 17th September, 2019 as IIChE - Student Chapter. The basic aim of the organization is to foster and maintain networking among students from across the nation through technical and social events on continuous basis. It has organized events like Chem-Fusion 2.0 in association with ChESA and various technical webinars which helps the students to learn more about the industry. These events were managed successfully by the senior and junior board members of the organization under the guidance of Dr. R. N. Reddy. CHEMFLASH VOLUME 21, ISSUE 1 19

Chem-Fusion 2.0 Chem-Fusion is a signature event of chemical engineering department organized by Chemical Engineering Student’s Association (ChESA) and Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers’ Student Chapter NU (IIChE NU) from last 2 years. This year due to pandemic situation, ChESA and IIChE Student Chapter has organized this fest completely online and conducted all the events and competition online very smoothly. These all events would have given all the students a better experience apart from their regular studies. Chem-Fusion 2.0 was having total 6 competition. CHEMFLASH VOLUME 21, ISSUE 1 20

Webinar on Higher Studies Mr. Vipul Tyagi visited the department virtually on 9th February, 2021 where he had given a webinar on “Higher Studies” which was organized by Chemical Engineering Students’ Association (ChESA). He is the director of IMS Gujarat (Pioneer Test Prep Institute of India) and founder and CEO of Orphicy (Ed-Tech Startup). He is also two times IIM-Calcutta convert, two times CAT Gujarat topper, an invited TEDx speaker, chief mentor at IMS India and has mentored over 18k students successfully to various top Management and Science schools in India and Abroad. 18. PAPER PRESENTED BY STUDENTS Mr. Kevin Vadaliya (18BCH026), Miss Sejal Jain (18BCH057), Miss Grishma Savani (18BCH056) from 6th Semester have presented a paper on the topic of Corrosion Control at Virtual International Conference on Advances in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering organised by Department of Chemical Engineering Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (Gujarat) India on April 16-17, 2021. ABSTRACT: Corrosion is the interaction of the metallic surface with the environment which results in the deterioration of the metallic body. Not only metallic surfaces are prone to corrosion but also the non-metals e.g. ceramic, rubber etc corrode when exposed to different environments. A reckon value for the total cost of corrosion across the globe was found to be US $2.5 trillion. From decommissioning to design, CMS (Corrosion Management System) keeps a check on the possible threats due to corrosion on the assets. Cost of corrosion can be evaluated by various methods. The latest adopted method is Direct-Indirect cost model developed in 2002 US FHWA study. To prevent and monitor corrosion in off-shore and on-shore pipelines, cathodic protection systems used are sacrificial anode system and impressed current systems. To restrain corrosion, pretreatment coatings: nonmetallic inorganic (ceramic coating materials, conversion, and anodized coatings) and organic coatings (sol-gel, conductive polymers, biofilms) are applied on the metal/alloy surfaces. The corrosion inhibitors gets attach to the metal surface via anchoring group which gets attached to the backbone of organic molecule, which contains additional substituent group, to increase the surface coverage. Corrosion inhibitors are mixture of active ingredients such as biocides, hydrate inhibitor, wax and asphaltene inhibitor etc. CHEMFLASH VOLUME 21, ISSUE 1 22
