Central News SCHAEFFLER CONTINUES SENIOR DESIGN PROJECTS FOR UNCC Fort Mill, S.C. (bl) Schaeffler Fort Mill’s Bob Southam, Director-R&D Management and Central Services-Americas, and Brian Lee, Principal Engineer - Advanced Product Development / Transmission Products and Applications, started building a relationship with the school of engineering at UNC Charlotte about 12 years ago. The goal was to support our local engineering university, from which many of our team members have come, and to build a better understanding of the capabilities of the school and its faculty. In the past, we have supported one senior design project each year. Over the years, we learned that the best ↑ (left to right) Austin Lantz, Matthew Gardner, Corey Hunt, Jay McKinney, Tom Fisher and Sean Kolesar. projects are relatively simple, rather than involved research projects or studies. For instance, we have had very good project teams that built assembly machines for the prototype shop and test rigs for the test lab. These projects can be a great way to get a machine built that we want or need, but don’t have the resources to dedicate to it. It is also a good way to build a prototype, like the golf cart that we used to test a cycloidal differential. The Breakthrough Asymmetric Mainshaft Bearing from Schaeffler Engineered to convert high thrust into high performance We designed our new, state-of-the-art Asymmetric Mainshaft Support Bearing for extreme applications where a wind turbine’s mainshaft bearing is threatened by high thrust forces. By optimizing the gearbox side of the bearing with an increased contact angle, potentially damaging thrust is safely transferred through the bearing to the housing support. The result: lower torque, less friction and less heat inside the bearing. Which means less downtime for you. And more power for your wind turbine. www.schaeffler.us ©2019
