I Beg Your Garden? Leave out dishes of water and meat-based dog or cat food (ideally chicken flavour) for hedgehogs. The young hoglets need help fattening up before they go into hibernation in late autumn, when they might appreciate one of our favourite hedgehog houses. Blackbirds and thrushes often continue nesting surprisingly late, well into August, so check your hedges for nests before cutting and wait until this season’s broods have definitely flown before you trim. Once you're confident that all nests are empty, it's time to give them a cut - find out which hedge trimmers came out on top when we put them through their paces. What To Plant Forget-me-nots Forget-me-nots(Myosotis sylvatica) can be sown throughout the summer months and into September. A useful ground cover plant for shade, they make a fine companion plant with tulips, and will readily self-seed once established. Sow in seed trays for planting out in spring or direct when you want them to grow. Calendula Colourful and easy to grow, Calendula can be sown in August and September, for flowers in the following spring. They're hardy, so simply direct sow them where they are to flower, either in shallow drills on the ground or in pots. Cornflowers As with pot marigold, you can sow cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) in August for May flowers. Cultivars to sow and grow include 'Black Ball', which has deep chocolate-coloured blooms, and 'Blue Ball'. Sow direct in shallow drills in the soil or on the surface of moist, peat-free compost in pots.

August Fun Facts Back in the days of the Anglo-Saxons, the month was called Weod Monath. Its translation of “weed month” is quite literal – in this month weeds and other plants grow the fastest in the northern hemisphere. On August 1st, Lammas day is celebrated as the first day of harvest in the UK. Traditionally it was the day in which harvested wheat would be baked into bread On August 6, 1762, the first-ever sandwich was created. It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish involving meat between two pieces of bread as he middle of a gambling game and didn't want to dirty his hands. August was a fateful month for the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. On August 24, 79AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted near the city. The mountain spewed out great clouds of ash, smoke, pumice and Molten lava

August was originally named Sextilis, which means the sixth month. It was renamed to August in 8 BCE to honor the first Roman Emperor, Augustus Caesar. In the northern hemisphere, August is considered to be the last month of summer. In the southern hemisphere, it’s the opposite of course, so it’s the last of the winter months! Many famous people where born in august such as: Sean Connery, Michael Jackson, Lucille Ball, Andy Wrong, Napoleon, Coco Chanel, Alfred Hitchcock, Mary Shelley and Richard Attenborough August is apparently a relatively common name for boys in Sweden. In 2014 it was reported to be the 55th most common name for newborn baby boys. Rock music lost a living legend on August 16, 1977, when Elvis Presley left the world behind.

Must Reads of August Here In the Barn, we have a wide selection of books for everyone to enjoy. We know how hard it is to pick one, so here are some recommendations to help you choose!

For years Jess believed that Joe - the father of her child and the only man she ever loved - had abandoned her during her greatest time of need. That belief nearly destroyed her. Seventeen years later, when cleaning out her mother’s house, Jess unpacks a box of cards and letters hidden in the attic and makes a discovery that changes everything about life as she knows it. Shaken but empowered, Jess - and her two stalwart best friends - set out on a remarkable journey to follow a set of faded postmarks around the world. Is Joe still alive? Does he know that Jess never forgot him? Maybe their love story isn’t over. Maybe one day they’ll find each other again… A hilarious collection of the many articles written by Stephen Fry for magazines, newspapers and radio. It includes selected wireless essays of Donald Trefusis, the ageing professor of philology brought to life in Fry's novel The Liar, and the best of Fry's weekly column for the Daily Telegraph. At the centre of this novel is the passionate love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff - recounted with such emotional intensity that a plain tale of the Yorkshire moors acquires the depth and simplicity of ancient tragedy. At 2AM on the morning of the 3rd of June 1940, General Harold Alexander searched along the quayside, holding onto his megaphone and called “Is anyone there? Is anyone there?” before turning his boat back towards England. Tradition tells us that the dramatic events of the evacuation of Dunkirk, in which 300,000 BEF servicemen escaped the Nazis, was a victory gained from the jaws of defeat. For the first time, rather than telling the tale of the 300,000 who escaped, Sean Longden reveals the story of the 40,000 men sacrificed in the rearguard battles.

Signs of The Month Leo Virgo H o r o s c o p e s Leo Although the dissonances that emanate from Taurus put you in the driver's seat, the Sun in Leo pushes you to aim high and far. You do not let them down! You continue to undertake with that logic and intelligence that characterize you. Without doing it on purpose, you know how to put yourself forward when the opportunity arises. You manage to reassure the most conservative minds. Although it's more complicated than usual, you take on challenges with panache! At the end of the month, the transfer of Mars in Libra gives you a little help that will be welcome. The only shadow on the board is Venus in Leo. A retrograde is not a curse, but as you are particularly concerned, do not force things. Wait until things regain their senses. Virgo For some time, Saturn has been telling you that your relationships won't bring you much. Your exchanges are less interesting. A distance settles with people you have known for years. Bonds fray because of time. In return, Uranus and Jupiter send you opportunities to meet new people. They propose that you evolve in a different universe of relationships, certainly, but which corresponds to you from now on. This month, if you agree, your life can come out of this boredom that tires you. To accomplish this little prodigy, Mars, by his presence in your sign, gives you courage and daring to accept what is offered to you. As for Mercury, which is also in Virgo, it strengthens your alertness that creates social, friendly or other bonds.
