In Germany we lost the Hallows’ Eve celebrationsand observe Allerheiligen (All Saints’ Day). Five years ago I spokewith a little boy from my neighborhood. He mentioned thathe loved fantasy characters and that he wanted to go aroundin costume with his little friends on Hallows’ Eve. So I helpedhim, and since then we now have thirty children who comein costume to our door on October 31. They don’t get candy;instead they have to master riddles and tasks. The first task is o get me to the door. Every year I hide thedoorbell and they have to either wake up an electronic singingpumpkin inside a birdcage or press a little red button andthen a witch starts cackling. WTheelcWomitechallI,s In Witch stand American Miniaturist 71 Gabriele Layne collected bits and pieces over time and mixed them together to make this mystical potion stand. My longtime friend, Silke Janas-Schloess- er, who has received great renown in the minia- tures world for her creations, gave me a small child doll I was admiring at her sales table during a miniature show in Germany. I was in disbe- lief as she handed the tiny treasure to me and said, “This child needs a good home.” The little girl had a charming expression on her face that seemed to be a combination of astonishment and curios- ity, and I knew she had to be placed in just the right setting to match her wonderful expression. At that same show I had also purchased accessories for a witch’s scene, so I thought a mystical market stand would provide the perfect back- drop for the inquisitive little girl. Upon returning home I went straight to work. The Right: A little girl is fascinated by all of the curious products for sale at this witch’s market stand.
