Thelma prefers to work on one bear at a time from start to finish instead of work- ing on several bears at once, as many other bear makers typically do. She has an entirely unique process of making her bears. “I do not make them in the conven- tional way of cutting a bear out completely, ABOVE: “Lucy and Anna Rags”, a little girl pushing her rag doll in a stroller. Thelma uses this specific process because it allows her to see the bear as it progresses. “I know if I need to make any changes to colours, accesso- ries or clothing as I go along. I also know what needs to be done to balance him while he is being completed so he will be able to stand on his own,” Thelma adds. All of Thelma’s bears are accompanied by stories about who they are and what they are doing. “These stories become part of the bear’s presentation. I like my bears to be able to perform everyday tasks,” she says. “As an example, if I say a bear is a golf player, then she will be able to stand by herself, hold and swing a handmade golf club, carry her handmade golf bag and have a handmade golf course to play on.” Thelma’s husband, Mike, also takes part in her teddy bear adventures. “Mike runs the websites, photographs the bears, and hand makes all of the wooden and metal accessories for the bears,” Thelma tells us. “But most significantly, he is very supportive and understands the bear world and its importance to me,” she adds. Mike and Thelma work together to make every- thing for the bears by hand, which is very important to both of them. Besides working for her bears, Thelma has a deep love for all crafts and tries to incorporate as many crafts as possible in her bear making. “Sometimes making the accessories and clothes is just as much14 t e d d y b e a r t i m e s . c o m
