The 11th formed up in late morning July 3 under the com-mand of Col. Kirkwood Otey as part of Maj. Gen. GeorgePickett ’s division. The regiment stepped off in mid-afternoonfor the assault on Cemetery Ridge. Within the hour, it wasbutchered by Union fire. Out of 359 men engaged, the 11thsuffered 40 percent casualties during the futile Pickett’sCharge that climaxed the decisive Confederate defeat. During the course of 1864, the regiment participated inan April attack on Fort Warren at Plymouth, N.C., thenreturned to Virginia for clashes at Drewry’s Bluff and ColdHarbor. After serving in the trenches at Petersburg duringthe winter of 1864-65, the 11th sustained horrendous lossesat Five Forks and Sailor’s Creek during the final days of Gen.Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. When Lee surrendered to Union Lt. Gen. Ulyssess S.Grant at Appomattox Court House, Va., April 9, 1865, the11th only mustered 28 men under the command of Com-pany E Sgt. John Adkinson. They were a mere 18 miles or soeast of home in Lynchburg, where they had begun their longmarch down the road to war four years earlier. Proprietor Brian Levy of U.S.-based TCS has spearheadedChinese production of varied figures re-creating the gallantmen of the 11th Virginia. The dynamic, gray-clad Confed-erates in kepis and frock coats include an officer pointingforward and waving his word (ref. CS00749), a Stars and Barsstandard-bearer (ref. CS00750), and soldiers posed standingfiring (ref. CS00751), charging (ref. CS00752), advancing atshoulder arms (ref. CS00753), stabbing with a fearsome knife(ref. CS00754) and using a musket as a club (ref. CS00755).  These 1:30-scale figures exude all the exertion and ten-sion of fighting men in action. Painting in matt colors withshading and highlighting adds to their dramatic appearance.Varied blanket rolls inject splashes of color to the remarkablywell-dressed Virginians. These figures retail for $35.90 U.S. apiece, except thebearer of the fluttering Confederate battle flag, which costs $37.90. n

A light flesh tone was added to the upper and lower eyelids. The rest of the face was painted in mixes of medium to light flesh. A slight red was added in the mix for the cheeks, as blond-haired people are usually lighter in skin tone than dark-haired people, in my opinion. As has happened before, the right eye didn’t come out as well as I wanted first time around, so I had to do a bit of reworking. Once I was happy with the eyes and the flesh tones, I applied a few very light layers of oil color to get the flesh tones blending together. The hair was painted in a mix of medium brown and light tan colors The uniform was painted in a blue-gray for the tunic and a darker brown-gray for the trousers to show that they are not a suit! For both, I painted a layer of the chosen mid-gray first of all, then added some lowlights in a blue/dark gray or dark brown/dark gray mix, and gradually lightened the clothing to the highlights of a light blue/gray or light brown/gray mix.
