artist profile It’s a fur addictionWhat started in a school sewing class has led to a successfulcareer as a bear artist and, with their own fur fabric store torun, life for Emma and Mark Nicholson is very busy By Jill Mundy Enter a furry world where Emma’s Bears keep company with a whole host of other critters, including pigs, owls - even dragons! Don’t be alarmed...these are all of the furry kind and just a few of the wonderful creations Emma has designed herself. Making bears began at an early age. “I actually picked up my first bear pattern in high school and made a bear as a project for sewing class. It was probably a com- bination of the sense of achievement and the incredible support of my family and friends that spurred me on to make more and more.” Emma was just 15 at the time and by the time she had turned 16, she was designing her own patterns and devel- oping her own signature look. In fact Emma’s Bears has been in business since that time and was registered as an Australian small business in 2007. “I was very inspired by the online and magazine bear artists that I was reading about and aspired to be producing that kind of qual- ity one day.” Emma has been married to husband Mark for eight years and together they also run Fur Addiction, an online store selling fur fabrics and a few other items required for bear making. When you take into account the fact that they have two children, Chelsea, five, and Byron aged three, you begin to get the picture that Emma likes to be busy. She even found time recently to help out some friends of theirs in a very special way: “On March 26th this year, I gave birth to a beautiful big 9lb 9oz baby boy for12 t e d d y b e a r t i m e s . c o m

Yolanda Levy of YoYo Bears is a great example of how making bears has helped her through a difficult time. She has been in the teddy bear industry for over 21 years now but was previously a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Police Officer. “I loved what I did as a police officer because I was able to interact and help people on a daily basis. I stepped into a career that was very male dominated and very hard for females. The training I had to go through to become an officer was equivalent to being in the military. I was one of the few females that were able to get through a very tough training pro- gramme.” Sadly, Yolanda was forced to retire after 14 years due to injuries sustained ‘on the job’ - a devastating end to her career. In 1992 she became quite ill as a result of these injuries and was bedridden for more than a year. “The only comfort I got was when I hugged a teddy bear that my fam- ily gave me in order to cheer me up. The little bear was a great comforter. When I was finally feeling well enough to sit up, I decided to make bears that would cheer me up and make me laugh.” Yolanda now makes her bears full time. “It is my job and what a fun job it is, to
