In addition he has been the ‘ghost con- tributor’ and sounding board for Mi- chael as he created several children’s characters such as The Herbs for BBC Watch with Mother series, Olga de Polga and Monsieur Pamplemouse. The most recent incarnation was in the 2014 animated feature film starring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters with the enthralling youth- ful Ben Whishaw voicing the star. MEET THE ARTIST‘ I like to think I was a good‘ Meet Kangarillapig companion, fitting neatly in the corner of a suitcase. i t’s not unusual for a bear artist to produce other creatures as well as teddy bears…rabbits, mice, even dragons. However, being asked to create a complete fantasy creature has to be just a little extraordinary. In January this year, Kat Hartley of Brierley Bears ac- cepted such a challenge when she was contacted by Rosie Button, author of a children’s book called ‘A Bleat on a Bleak Winter’s Night’. “The main character of the book is Kangarillapig”, Kat explained. “He has the bottom half of a kangaroo, the upper body of a gorilla and the head of a pig - hence, Kangarillapig. Rosie asked me if I could create him and, relishing the challenge, I said yes.” Kat confessed she usually ‘wings it’ without doing a mock up first. For this different beast however, she thought she should be more cautious and so the first Kangarillapig was constructed from calico fabric. With the basic design approved, Kat then showed Rosie a selection of fur fabrics and when she had chosen the ones she wanted, it was time to get them ordered. Kangarillapig was to be dressed in a waist- coat, which Kat also made - one in green, another in red and one in blue. “When he was finished I sent him to Rosie for ap- proval but she decided his head was a little too small for the rest of him. I agreed with her and so she sent him back to have a new head made.” So far Kangarilla pig has visited several schools in the UK but also two English schools in the Costa Blanca, Spain. “He was very popular and the children loved him. He travels in his own little basket and the children get so excited when he comes out.” He also made lots of new friends at the Geronimo children’s festival in Man- chester at the end of May. Kangarillapig is clearly set for stardom. 33TEDDY BEAR TIMES
