Now this was no squishy cushion on the floor but something rather more substantial and grand. Jenny thought that a lot of teddy bear collectors would like to have something similar for their bears - and that was Phyll’s ‘eureka’ moment. “It all started there really. I made a few chairs and, with some encouragement, took a stand at a local teddy bear fair. There was quite a bit of interest there and I have more fairs lined up later in the year.” Before giving up work when she had her three children, Phyll was a tailoress and the skills she learned then have been key to her craft. “When my youngest went off to school, I began to feel the need to get back to work but needed something to fit around the children. I applied for a job making curtains and learnt everything I needed to know. This was back in 1977 and it is still my full time job.” Phyll makes the beds in her spare time and said: “I am just one of those people who needs to be busy!” Now self-employed, she makes her cur- tains in her workshop which is in a busi- ness unit close to where she lives.
