Bruin - a large American bear The first bear is a large 1920’s Ameri- can boy named Bruin. He stands 26” tall and is very firmly stuffed with woodwool (excelsior), making him quite a heavy armful! As you can see by his ‘before’ image, he needed some tlc to help him survive many more years and en- able him to supervise over the owner’s grandchildren, from a safe distance of course! I began work on him by removing the old replacement pads that were very worn and also some glued areas of ex- posed woodwool. As he was quite dusty and grubby I gave him a very gentle vacuum, followed by a surface clean and allowed him to air off overnight. The following day he was ready to 36 TEDDY BEAR TIMES

Chiltern’s range further included, in 1958, a bear on a tricycle, based on a character from the Disney cartoon, Dumbo. He was one of the first bears designed for Chiltern by Pam Howells, now a well-known bear artist in her own right.
