POTSDAM GIANTS FIFES AND DRUMSBY TRADITION OF LONDON LTD.Reviewed by: Stuart A. HessneyTradition of London Ltd. has reissued Fifers and drummer from the Prussian king’s beloved “Long Guys” produced by Tradition.a splendid eight-figure set depicting the Tradition’s Potsdam Giants Fife and Drums.Potsdam Giants Fifes and Drums. Founded in 1675, this Prussianinfantry regiment was composed ofmen of above average height recruitedfrom all over Europe and beyond. Someof them were even presented to thePrussian monarch as gifts to maintaingood foreign relations. The unit was known as the“Potsdamer Riesengarde” (Giant Guardof Potsdam) during the reign of PrussianKing Friedrich Wilhelm I (1688-1740).The Prussian people nicknamed themthe “Lange Kerls” (Long Guys) becausethey stood an impressive minimum of6 foot 2 inches. At one point, theregiment include an Irish 7-footer. The Prussian king adored these livingand breathing soldiers in a way similarto how we collectors love our toy troops. He trained, drilled and inspected themon a daily basis. He enjoyed paintingtheir portraits from memory. He wouldmarch them out to wow foreign visitors. If the ruler needed some cheering up,especially if he was in his sickbed, hewould order the entire regiment tomarch past him led by their mascot bear. The king reportedly told a Frenchambassador, “The most beautiful girl orwoman in the world would be a matterof indifference to me, but tall soldiers —they are my weakness.” Their dress consisted of a red mitre,a Prussian blue jacket with gold lining, scarlet breeches and white gaiters. Theunit was disbanded after Russia wasdefeated by French Emperor Napoleonin 1806. Tradition proprietor MagnusLindström has assembled a 54-mm setof black musicians made up of four fifersand four side drummers. Originallydesigned by David Scheinmann, they aremodeled in feathered white turbans withgold badges, in addition to the PotsdamGiants’ signature uniform. Made in England, this gorgeous,gloss-painted set of Potsdam Giantscosts £104.75 and comes in a traditional-style crimson box. I needed to bring the torso forward and bend the knees. I did this using a method I learnt from Roy Dilley in the 1970s that still holds true today. You could cut a length out of the part to be bent, use a pin to provide the shape and fill with modeling clay. But for plastic figures, I like to use a pencil to define where the cuts should be made. STRAPPING UP I used the same method to make the satchel and a representation of the water bottle (just a round blob of putty squashed flat with a piece of cardboard). The straps were formed from a rolled out piece of Green Stuff using plenty of talcum powder, then cut with a scalpel lengthwise. Once things dried, I used Super Glue to fix the straps to the satchel and add buckles supplied in the kit. I decided to make the straps on the figure out of paper, just for the sake of it really. This was done by cutting out a piece of good quality paper and wrapping it around the figure, marking out with a pencil on the paper where it would go. I did this because straps are not just straight because they must follow the contours of the body. I gave the figure a quick file with the rat-tail file where the straps would go, so as to help them form against the figure. I used Liquid Poly to cement the paper to the plastic. Alternatively, PVA glue could be used. I then applied the smaller details, including the epaulettes, cuffs and cross-belt badge. It is these small parts which really show the skill of the sculpting and molding process. The haversack/backpack was made up as per the kit, with straps made from plastic card.
