feature From Design to Manufacture: The Bespaq Way Bespaq International provides its President Shawn Flading the perfect place to showcase his new and innovative miniature products. A topnotch designer, Shawn’s fresh ideas provide inspiration to miniaturists for fun and interesting projects. When it comes to high-quality and desirable “off the shelf” miniature furniture, Bespaq offers the best of the best. It is a giant in the miniature world. Each piece is made with the needs of the serious miniature collector in mind. So, what is the process from design in the U.S. to manufacture in China? Shawn Flading tells us: 1. The beginning of the design process usually starts in one of two places. Sometimes, inspira- tion comes from something wonderful I’ve seen. More often, however, it comes by planning exactly what sets of furniture our customers have said they need. 2. From there, I do a lot of research to find pic- tures of items that I like. 3. Then, I have to come up with the measure- ments for the pictured items. This is a closely held trade secret taught to me by my uncle, Pit Ginsberg, the founder of Bespaq. 4. Once the dimensions are finalised, I send the pictures and dimensions to our factory in China. The factory then comes up with a drafted drawing based on the dimensions given. 5. At this point, I have to look at it and make more changes to the furniture to give it my own pizzazz. I also have to closely examine the pro- portions. It may take up to ten revisions on the drafted picture before this is done. 6. Now, it goes back to the factory to be put into the sampling process. 7. Once I receive the sample back, I make more changes to the item until I am completely happy with it. This can take around three to five samples. 8. After I’ve approved the sample, it is time to go fabric shopping if the item requires upholstery. It is always difficult to find fabrics nowadays. It is a constant search every week, going to fabric stores. 9. It is then into the production stage and the final product arrives onto our shelves. This process can take from three months to one year, to make an item from beginning to end. 58 august 2014 D O L L S H O U S E W O R L D
