I want to thank my son and my students who inspired me to do this text book to better their objective of learning English. 2
Introduction - Introduccion The constant use of the English language as an international means of communication is in constant expansion. This fact is reflected in different fields and in various domains where English is considered as a working tool. In order to reach specific objectives, world countries, including Colombia and all Latin-American countries, introduced English courses at all the levels of the educational system especially at the university through ESP. The latter is the common and well-established teaching methodology that the language teachers actually use to achieve the specific learners‟ needs, and meet the social requirement. English for Specific Purposes Ingles para Propositos Especiales Since the 1960‟s ESP has become one of the most active branches of Applied Linguistics in general, and of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in particular. Among the factors that could explain its vitality and its expansion is, as previously mentioned, the emergence of English as a world language, for this reason the necessity to cope with the different teaching situations and needs that such a position brings about. Such necessity implies an understanding of its development, types and the different teaching concepts of ESP. However, it is of great importance to start with the main definitions stated by the linguists concerning ESP. Generally, the Students study English “not because they are interested in the English Language or English culture as such, but because they need English for study or work purposes”. ESP specific characteristics 1. ESP is defined to meet specific needs of the learners; 2. ESP makes use of underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves; 3. ESP is centered on the language (grammar, lexis, register), skills, discourse and genre appropriate to these activities. Variable Characteristics: 1. ESP may be related to or designed for specific disciplines; 3
2. ESP may use, in specific teaching situations, a different methodology from that of General English; 3. ESP is likely to be designed for adult learners, either at a tertiary level institution or in a professional work situation. It could, however, be for learners at secondary school level; 4. ESP is generally designed for intermediate or advanced students. Most ESP courses assume some basic knowledge of the language systems, but it can be used with beginners. Lesson one The Alphabet 3 Reasons the alphabet is more important than you think Here are three reasons why the alphabet is more important than you think. 1. It will help your pronunciation We all want to speak like a native speaker or as close to one as possible. Really learning and knowing the alphabet is a great way to do this! We really need to know the sounds of the letters and know them well. 2. It will help you to think in the language Another goal we all have or all should have is to think in the language we are learning. When we start to think in the language, we can communicate a lot quicker. We no longer need to translate back and forth between the two. We can also start to speak more like a native speaker this way. Really knowing the alphabet is one way to get yourself to that point. When we really know the sounds that each letter can make, we can start to read the words as they’re actually spoken. 3. You will needtospell things Why do we learn languages? Well we learn for a number of reasons. However if we are learning one so we can communicate in it in a foreign country, we will have to spell things from time to time. It’s a part of life in likely every culture. 5
