Clover Connection June 2018 Wichita County

About Us Wichita County 4-H is about having fun, learning, exploring and discovering. In 4-H, young people make new friends, develop new skills, become leaders and help shape their communities. 4-H gives them a chance to pursue their own interests – from photography to computers, from building rockets to raising animals. A list of 4-H projects is available here. They go places – to camp, to state and national conferences. They learn to be leaders and active citizens. In 4-H clubs, they serve as officers and learn to conduct meetings, handle club funds, and facilitate group decision-making. They give back to their communities. 4-H members get involved in volunteer projects to protect the environment, mentor younger children and help people who are less fortunate. History of the 4-H Clover and Emblem The first 4-H emblem was a three-leaf clover, introduced sometime between Pledge 8 Clubs represented head, heart and hands. In 1907 and 1908. 4-H Spotlight 2018 Healthy Texas Youth Rachel Brockriede & Kelsey Thomas Ambassadors The Healthy Texas Youth Ambassador program is a program to develop youth leaders who can serve as a source of health education and outreach in schools and communities across Texas. As a Healthy Texas Youth Ambassadors, they will serve as a community health and wellness leader and work directly with our County Extension office, agents and other volunteers to provide information through educational programs and activities that will encourage healthy habits for both youth and adults.

Kaylie McCarty is a graduating senior in the 2018 class at Iowa Park High School. She has been active in both 4-H and FFA for 10 years. She has shown rabbits, lambs and pigs at local, county and state levels. She is also a member of the swine quiz bowl team. Kaylie is the Chaplain of the Baconators pig club, and participates in numerous community service projects throughout the community. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Iowa Park where she is active in the youth group and volunteers yearly to help put on vacation bible school. Kaylie was the recipient of the 2018 WCJLS 4-H Scholarship and will use it towards tuition at Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas. She will be continuing her love of agriculture by pursuing a degree in Plant Sciences. Her dream is to be a Horticulturist. While at college she will be a part of both the meat judging team and the college’s swine show team and breeding program. Being selected for both of these teams will enable her to help pay for some of her college expenses. Kaylie McCarty Being a part of 4-H has taught her a tremendous amount of information and skills that have prepared her for both college and life in general. She hopes to continue to give back to both programs who have helped her grow into the person she is today! McKena Shafer has been a member of Wichita County 4-H for 14 years. She began as a Clover kid. She has served as a county council delegate and a club officer for multiple years. McKena has been involved with the Sheep project, Livestock Judging, and Food and Nutrition Quizbowl. She has shown at all the major stock shows and county for 10 years, receiving Showmanship buckles at county each year she showed. McKena has mentored younger 4-Her’s and helped with the promote 4-H on TV & Radio, and helped with the Kids, Kows, and More Program. She has received each on the star awards, and represented District 3 a House of Representative at Congress, McKena Shafer and 4-H day at the capital. She was a 2018 graduate of Electra High School and will be attending West Texas A&M in August. Caitlyn was in Cowpoke City 4-h club for 3years. She did archery and pistol she has also became asst. certification coach for pistol and black powder this year. She enjoyed being in 4-h. She learned a lot of neat things and learned the safety of fire Caitlyn Donaghey arms. Her plans are to became a EMT and plans on helping and volunteering her time with 4-h.
