Feature Article The Loupe by Printing Industry Midwest (PIM) WHY MANAGERS BUY IN TO SAFETY In business, the name of the game is money, money, and more money. To win top management support for your company’s safety program, you must play the numbers game. However, there’s more to selling a safety program than just raw numbers. Here are some ideas on how to get your management to buy in to safety. 1. EVALUATE AT YOUR SAFETY RECORD First, review past workers’ compensation records to determine where your company has had problems with injuries and illnesses. Note any trends in workers’ comp costs over the years. Management will be more likely to invest in employee safety and health once it sees how it can reduce workers’ comp costs. 2. PERFORM A NEEDS/GAP ANALYSIS Assess your company’s compliance status with all applicable OSHA regulations. Identify what your company is doing to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. PIM can help you if you would like professional assistance with this step. A compliance assessment (audit) will identify the areas in your company’s safety program that must be improved to reduce the number of accidents, injuries, and illnesses. You must make it clear to your management how these improvements will reduce costs or improve productivity. 6

Partner Article 5 THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A CREDIT CARD PROCESSOR Choosing a credit card processor is an important decision for your business; after all, they handle YOUR money. You want a credit card processor that will transfer money from your customers to you in an accurate, safe, convenient, and affordable manner. Here are 5 things to look for when choosing a credit card processor. 1. CUSTOMER SERVICE Many processors have taken a shortcut by contracting out their customer support. When you call for help, you'll likely be routed to a call center, spend an extensive amount of time on hold, and might even have to wait for a supervisor who can make a decision. You want more from your processor. Consider that when you call them for help, you might be in a desperate moment. You want to dial a specific number and be routed immediately to someone who can help. You also want a personal representative assigned to your account that recognizes you when you call and is empowered to solve your issue on the spot. Here's a great test: Call the customer support phone # for a credit card processor you're considering. See how long it takes to get to a live person who can help. 2. RETENTION & REPUTATION A credit card processor with a sterling reputation won't be shy about providing references. Another red flag is ownership history. If the company has been purchased or acquired numerous times in recent years, they likely don't have a stable work environment, negatively affecting customer interactions. A reputable credit card processor should have an A+ BBB rating and a retention rate of 80% or higher. You should be suspicious of any credit card processor that cannot provide high-quality information about their reputation. 3. PCI COMPLIANCE PROCESS Many credit card processors are happy to charge a monthly fee for \"non-compliance\" but aren't proactive with helping merchants gain and maintain PCI compliance. A credit card processor that's a true business partner will feature an in-house PCI compliance team that pro-actively contacts every merchant to complete their annual PCI compliance review well before the due date. They'll also be very concerned with your PCI compliance status because it protects your customer's information and reduces risk and liability for your business. A processor's approach to PCI Compliance can be a great indicator of how they'll handle other situations, like contacting businesses to prepare them for the EMV liability shift. You want a processor that will be proactive, not reactive, about protecting your business. 4. PRODUCTS & SERVICES DESIGNED TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS A credit card processor should be a business partner who offers the most efficient way to process cards and help you GROW your business. A great processor will ask how you currently process credit cards and set up the most convenient, safe, and affordable way to process for your business. They'll also help you implement products and services that help you increase sales and grow your business, like expanding into online sales. Finally, they'll offer services that help you lower risk, save money and operate more efficiently: fraud protection services, customer reporting, sales reporting, inventory management, gift and loyalty card programs, and customer billing options including rolodex, online bill pay, and recurring billing. 5. PRICING There are many ways to price credit card processing: tiers, flat rates, interchange pass-thru, etc. The best plan for your business depends on how many credit cards you process, what types of cards you process, your average ticket amount, and many other factors. A quality processor will thoroughly investigate how you run your business and present a plan that'll be the most cost-effective for you. Further, the processor's proposal and monthly statement should be easy to read. You should ask for a sample monthly statement to ensure it is easy to comprehend. PIM OFFERS THESE SERVICES PIM Services NOISE The Loupe by Printing Industry Midwest (PIM) Do you know if the noise levels in your facility exceed the OSHA limits? OSHA requires that noise monitoring be conducted when the employee exposures are at or above 85 decibels (dB). Printing operations may exceed 85 dB. Some exceed 90 dB. Do you have the noise monitoring results to show OSHA? Printing Industry Midwest (PIM) owns OSHA compliant noise measuring equipment to document employee noise exposures. PIM can help you determine the noise levels with this noise dosimeter. If the noise levels exceed 85 dB as an 8-hour time-weighted average, there are some additional OSHA requirements including annual hearing tests for the affected employees. If the levels do not exceed 85 dB as an 8-hour time-weighted average, the only thing you need to do is provide the employees with the results of the noise survey. The ultimate goal with noise is to prevent hearing loss. What action do you need to take? Do you need to measure the noise levels? Simply provide a variety of hearing protection or require its use in certain operations? Have annual hearing tests? PIM can provide the data to answer these questions. With this data you may even be able to discontinue the annual hearing tests based on the sampled noise exposure. That could be a savings of thousands of dollars per year. CARBON MONOXIDE MONITORING Do you have propane fueled forklifts? If so, don’t forget about carbon monoxide in the workplace. MN OSHA requires that the exhaust gases from those propane fueled forklifts contain no more than 1% carbon monoxide at idle and at ¾ throttle. There also is a requirement that air monitoring be conducted at least quarterly in the area where carbon monoxide exposure is most likely from those forklifts. The airborne exposures cannot exceed 35 parts per million for an 8 hour time weighted average. PIM owns monitoring devices to measure carbon monoxide in the work area. Measurements can be taken by PIM quarterly in the area where the propane fueled forklifts are used (a MN OSHA requirement). This will also enable you to prove to MN OSHA that the airborne exposures to carbon monoxide are not exceeded.
