Introduction OPT was established nearly a century ago and the OPT Awards are themselves almost 50 years old. But, in all that time, we have never seen anything like 2020. The impact of the pandemic could be felt in our socially distanced judging. It can be traced in our postponed awards ceremony. It is, of course, present in the fact we’re meeting virtually. Everything, in a sense, is different. But however different the form of the Awards may seem, its function remains the same. OPT was established to preserve the best of the old, to encourage the best of the new, and to educate people about the city of Oxford and its surroundings. Our Awards are an important part of this, as we seek to recognize the finest new buildings and the most exemplary efforts to preserve older structures. This year, with the new Green Award, we also celebrate those projects which demonstrate excellent work towards sustainability. It has been a delight to see so many entries this year. Despite the difficulties posed in 2020, there have been a great many projects working hard to help bring Oxford to life. In this, the 43rd year of the OPT Awards, we considered an incredible forty-five competitors – all of which can be seen on these pages. None of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsors, Carter Jonas, Critchleys and Mathews Comfort. I am immensely grateful to them, to the OPT team, and to all those whose hard work and creativity is celebrated here. The Rev Prof William Whyte Chairman of the Awards Panel
Sponsors
Judging Panel The judges are appointed as a cross section of local people, all with a wide range of skills and knowledge of Oxford. Thanks to the support of the University of Oxford and Historic England, we were able to go ahead with Oxford Open Doors Goes Outside in 2020. The whole event was designed around social distancing, so from virtual events to self- guided walks, and some real outside places open with guided tours, there was something for everyone. The ‘green spaces’, ‘hidden heritage’ and ‘partner’ walks were so popular they are still available, so take a look: www.oxfordpreservation.org.uk 26,500 virtual views 69% new audience 80 events “I had no idea there would be quite so much “Open Doors is one of my yearly highlights to do!” and you didn’t let us down despite the pandemic.” Save the date: 11 – 12 September 2021 Get team building and sign up now to volunteer at Oxford Open Doors!
