Turning Report: Life Life turnaround at year three of five around
Turning Life is approaching the end of the third Life year in a five-year turnaround plan, here is an update on progress so far around The primary focus of the turnaround plan is to enable us to win hearts and minds and save lives in a hostile and challenging environment by: 1. ensuring services are fit for purpose 2. securing the future viability of services 3. ensuring the financial sustainability of Life People Behind any successful organisation are its people: trustees, staff and volunteers. As an organisation employing upwards of 90 staff, it is vital that we have the right people in the right jobs. Inevitably, any turnaround will result in some people leaving the organisation, some moving to more appropriate roles, and the training and development of others to flourish. The team have been complemented by several key new individuals to lead departments. Thanks to our staff and volunteers, in collaboration with the trustees, we have been able to effect transformational change, resulting in winning- hearts and minds and saving more lives than ever in the history of the charity.

Services Life is a unique organisation in the UK with a complex operational environment and range of services . Integral to our service provision is consistency, quality and professionalism which has demonstrated a need for national standardisation. This has seen a substantive in- crease in the reach and number of beneficiaries that we support and confidence in the quality and consistency of care provided. Life boutique charity shops Retail The key objective of our retail chain is to generate profit to support our services and provide a high-street presence for our message. The turnaround has seen the consolidation of our charity retail chain, down-scaling our 22 shops to 12. We launched our first new shop in April 2019. Independent profit generated through retail is forecast to be £130k next year which will be critical to Life’s sustainability and independence. Pregnancy Matters™ online Pregnancy Matters™ Online has seen a complete turnaround in our counselling and support services. Effective digital marketing has resulted in an unprecedented increase in client contact with an average of over 70 women a day reaching out to our Pregnancy Matters™ services . Our reach and conversion rate, and ultimately the number of lives we save, are only limited by funds.
Pregnancy Matters™ houses Our network of 23 Pregnancy Matters™ houses continues to provide vital support to homeless pregnant women and their children. 50 years ago, there were no housing associations and the stigma of pregnancy outside of marriage was prevalent. The challenges of today are different and so the relevance of our housing provision continues to be under review as we work to build and expand this service. Life Matters® We continue to reach out to 25k students every academic year in addition to running campaigns and media responses through our Life Matters® work. Notably, we successfully received Tampon Tax funding and were successful in a legal challenge against Lambeth Council. We are currently reviewing the work of Life Matters® to meet the needs of a culture very different from our founding years. Our new Life Matters® strategy will be published in the fourth quarter of 2019. Finance Creating a sustainable financial position for Life has been at the heart of the turnaround plan. Our published annual accounts show our planned, declared and transparent investment of reserves and resources in this five-year plan. We are pleased to announce that as part of the turna- round plan, the trustees have just approved the 2019/20 budget (year four) with a surplus of circa £30k. This sees the financial turnaround of the organisation complete. Brand Crucial to our success has been the rebrand of the organisation, a cultural shift to ensuring that the organisation is relevant in our multi- faceted and multimedia society. The introduction of Life Matters® and Pregnancy Matters™ has been critical to this. As part of this vital change we have embedded the following foundational principles to guide all our activities: Needs-led | Evidence-based | Outcome-driven | Collaborative
Governance In June 2016, Jack and Nuala Scarisbrick relaunched Life at our national exposé, Ignite. This was the start of an innovative and ambitious plan to re-establish Life as the UK’s largest prolife charity. Keen to hand on the baton to a younger generation, Jack & Nuala retired and a new board of trustees were appointed. Good governance has been established through the design and implementation of a five-year strategic and business plan including: departmental action plans with key performance indicators reported quarterly • a full re-design of the financial structures and chart of accounts • the introduction of monthly management accounts • the implementation of the ‘Trusted Charity’ quality and monitoring system.
