ROSARIO INSTITUTE 2 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Chapter I Introduction Background of the study Throughout the decade, the use of herbal medication as an alternative method for treatment become in favor to people with limited access to conventional medicine. Herbal medication is defined as the tradition of using herbs and herbal preparations to prevent or cure a disease (Merriam-Webster. n.d.). Across the world, traditional medicine or nonconventional medicine may be termed complementary medicine (WHO, 2013) for its, more recently, popular use in parallel with allopathic medicine, especially for the treatment and control of chronic diseases. It is assessed that up to four billion individuals (addressing 80% of the total populace) living in the developing world highly depends on herbal medicinal products as an essential source of healthcare and traditional medical practice (Bodeker et al., 2012). In contrast to this, advance medical treatment has arisen and help most people in avoiding disability and death (Sullivan, 2018). It was proven that modern medication can be more effective with the use of scientifically approved approaches and methods. Connection between the two types of medication is evident as many of today’s modern medication was derived from the traditional use of herbs. One example of this is the Sambong capsules. Derived from its leaves, the capsules were recognized with medicinal potentials and has been successfully commercialized around the Philippines (TTBDO, 2016). Furthermore, records of numerous studies discussing viewpoint to the traditional practices of herbal medication was taken in account. (2019), this study surveyed 50 community members of NCR’s surrounding cities and has concluded a less percentage of herbal remedies’ usage among the participants. In consideration to the above discussion, the researchers developed a topic entitled, “The Perception of Generation Z to the Usage of Herbal Medication in an Urbanized Area.” This study is conducted to focus among generation born from 1997- 2006 and their perception towards herbal practices in considering different factors such as beliefs and their environment. This aims to weigh the validity of herbal medicine among people exposed to conventional medication around Rosario, Cavite. The indicated study locale was selected to fit the main objective of this study and to be convenient among the researchers with a great understanding about herbal practices around the study area. The study can signify preferences and instances of herbal practices that would augment knowledge to the community, its members, especially the Generation Z. This can also benefit future researchers, as this can be their base line or future reference. This study will take place using qualitative methodological approach, basing on the recent study of “Why people use herbal medicine: insights from a focus-group study in Germany”. Through this approach data will be gathered efficiently using online platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet. A group of people between the ages of 16-25 were Selected through Convenience Sampling and will be interviewed as the respondents of this research. The collected data will be analyzed with qualitative content analysis, making use of verbatim transcription. This qualitative research will determine the current generation’s perception regarding herbal medication in Rosario, Cavite from March-April, 2022.

ROSARIO INSTITUTE 4 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Statement of the Problem The study seeks to determine Generation Z’s perception towards the use of herbal medications in an urbanized area, particularly Rosario, Cavite. This study will assess the validity of herbal medicines in the modern period by considering socio-demographic profile that influence the current generation. Specifically, this intends to answer the following research questions and should lead the entire study towards the goal of this research: 1. How do the following socio-demographic variables influences Generation Z’s perspective on the utilization of herbal medication: 1.1 Age 1.2 Beliefs and Tradition 1.3 Environment 2. What is the existing status of herbal medicines to the outgoing growth of modern medicine in an urbanized area? 3. How did the possible usage of herbal medicines help and assist individuals in an urbanized locale?

ROSARIO INSTITUTE 5 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Scope and delimitation This study is primarily focused on the perception of the Generation Z towards the use of herbal medication in an urbanized area. Indicatively, this research aims to define the municipality of Rosario, Cavite, as the study area. It's ideal to conduct the research in a locale where residents are diverged on whether they prefer herbal medication practice in contrast to the modern medication by gathering the preference among respondents. In connection to this, the target population of this study would be the Generation Z born from 1997 to 2006. The coverage of this study also extends to the application of Convenience Sampling as the sampling method in determining the respondents` demographics. Moreover, the study demonstrates a Qualitative Methodological Approach in conducting this research. This study will be extremely useful in addressing the state of herbal practices in an urbanized area; whether it is still widely used today or has been forgotten and neglected by today's generation. The community will be better informed about the general perception of its people, as well as how likely their socio-demographic profile are to influence their attitude toward herbal medication, as a result of this study. The conduct of the study is concentrated among 5 respondents with ages of 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 of which are all residents of Rosario, Cavite. Furthermore, the research will not dig deeper on the different practices of herbal medications, its medical efficacy and reliability, and the tradition`s history as the research only focuses on the respondents` input. The vast scope of modern medicine will also be excluded from this study, as it will simply function as a constant variable. The researchers will also utilize interview through Zoom or Google Meet as the method for the collection of data.

ROSARIO INSTITUTE 6 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Although limited to selected factors, this research can still be explored through further analysis with more flexible variables in the future. This qualitative research will determine the current generation’s perception regarding herbal medication in Rosario, Cavite from March-April, 2022.

ROSARIO INSTITUTE 7 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Significance of the study This research aims to provide information regarding the perception of Generation Z towards the usage of herbal medication. This study will not only yield data useful for the researchers but will also benefit the beneficiaries mentioned below: Generation Z. After being exposed to the expanding popularity of conventional medicine, this study will determine their thoughts on the use of herbal medication and could be one of the factors in solving and declaring its stance. This research will give aid in learning more about how their opinions may be affected through socio-demographic profile such as: Age, Beliefs, and Environment. This will also assist the generation in establishing their perspectives on the significance of non-conventional medication in their daily lives. Community. The chosen location, Rosario Cavite, has a variety of points when it comes to any medication. The community will benefit from this study by enhancing their knowledge of how its people utilize herbal medicine around an urbanized area. By the end of this study, the community will identify how the possible usage of herbal medicines helps and assist its members in an urbanized locale. Organization involved in Herbal Practices. With the existence of this study, it can expand ideas about the use of herbal medicine and contribution to the integration of the health industry. This study on Generation Z's perspectives will be beneficial in developing their assistance and improving the quality of traditional and alternative medicine's health care services in the contemporary period.

ROSARIO INSTITUTE 8 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Future Researchers. Through the use of this study, future researchers may use it as their reference and baseline in conducting and developing their own researches. This study can also give an understanding about the herbal practices which will serve as an expansion of knowledge to the field of research.

ROSARIO INSTITUTE 9 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Conceptual Framework The figure 1 illustrates the conceptual framework of this study through the use of Input-process-output model (IPO model). The input includes the independent variable of this study which is the Socio-demographic profile of Generation Z respondents; their age, beliefs, traditions, and environment. It also includes the exposure of Modern Medication in an Urbanized Area as the control variable of this study. The research process then enumerates the planning, selection of participants, collection of data using online platforms, analysis of data using verbatim transcription, and presentation of final data. The output serves as the dependent variable of the study which is the Perception of Generation Z to the Usage of Herbal Medication in an Urbanized Area. Figure 1. ROSARIO INSTITUTE 10 “A Tradition of Quality Education” Definition of Terms Convenience sampling - is a research strategy in which researchers acquire market research data from a pool of respondents who are readily available. The perception of Generation Z towards the usage of herbal medication was the main focus of this study. Modern Medication – This term was used as the control variable of the study. Considering the exposure of modern medication in an urbanized area can affect the dependent variable which is the perception of the Generation Z to herbal medication. Qualitative Content Analysis - is a research strategy that involves categorizing and recording aspects of textual, visual, or auditory information in order to study them.
