‘Songs for a New World’ breaks new musical ground By Derek Liavas “A new world just across the ocean.” Those are the open- ing lyrics to Jason Robert Brown’s earth-shattering musical, Songs for a New World, and those words capture the essence of the show perfectly. This show is not your typical Bye Bye Birdie or Guys and Dolls; a musical of this caliber has never existed before. Often described as a “song cycle,” JRB’s Songs for a New World has no concrete plot/story line. It is instead a collection of songs filled with multiple (shifting?) characters and conflicts all revolving around a similar theme: A New World. \"It's about one mo- ment,” says Brown. “It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.\" All of songs in the show involve this journey into the new world and how to handle the challenges faced along the way; be they coping with losing a lover, an unexpected pregnancy, and suicide to name a few. The creativity Brown put into creating this musical is enlightening. He was able to craft such an exciting story without the restrictions of the conventional musical. He didn’t feel the need to write out the story detail by detail or give the char- acters extensive background stories. Instead he allows the audience to experience the char- acters and conflicts for ourselves. I truly felt like I was on this journey to the new world alongside these characters. In the song “I’d Give It All for You” we experience the story of two lovers who have fallen out of love, but when reunited realize they cannot live without one another. Brown does not give us much background of these characters; we do not know the lovers names, we don’t know why they fell from each other. All we know is that the char- acters “tried to believe it was better without you,” but they both realize that they still love one another. In the song “Just One Step” we learn about a mother who is threatening to jump off a building because her husband Murry isn’t giving her the attention she believes she deserves. Although this song has a more literal and fixed story, Brown doesn’t set us up with prior knowledge, we experience what the woman is feeling in the moment. That is the power of music, he leaves it up to us to soak up the emotion and meaning of his stories.16 | THE PIONEER | February 8, 2016
