Demon Squad finishes strong at State and.. The 2017-18 Demon Squad finished in the Top 12 out of 180 teams at the IHSA State Finals, surpassing expectations in an exciting season. It was a season fraught with obstacles, and head coach Sue Kawecki worried whether the team would prevail, much less compete, at a State level. But the small team managed to remain above the fray and knocked out some tough competition along the way, including several nationally ranked teams. Coach Kawecki and the whole team have learned that strength lies even in small numbers and to never underestimate the underdog. Then the Maine East Poms team won first place at the IDTA Regional this past weekend and will compete at the IDTA State Finals next weekend. Captain Joselle Portillo placed first in the solo division— this time beating 15 other competitors for the trophy!2 | THE PIONEER | February 6, 2018

The Needle Drop by Nickolas Muileart It has been quite a year for all of us. Political and entertainment drama have plagued this year with major whats and whys. But we know one thing, it's been quite the year for music. The Grammy Awards celebrated the top songs and artists of 2017, but most of the music honored there are popular, mainstream bands and artists. To find great music that not everyone has heard of, sometimes you need to look a little deeper than the Grammy nomination lists. Here are my picks for the top three albums of 2017 and a look back at a great 80s album. Thundercat - Drunk Mac DeMarco - This Old Dog From the first few seconds of “Rabbot Ho,” you know you’re in He’s back! The king of Lofi, romantic, jangle pop is for a ride. Filled with songs about isolation and not being able to do enough, this album is not for the faint ofthe heart. It may sound like this is a warning, but it is not. You have to mentally prepare yourself to not get @mehspioneercaught in a emotional whirlwind with Mr Marshall’s lyrics and apathetic guitars. I’m gonna be honest, when bit.ly/ThePioneerI first heard this album, I didn’t enjoy it. Frankly, it sounded scary to me! But three days after my first listen, Isat down and listened to it again, and that’s when I truly appreciated this album. This album is a work of art.The overall mood of this album is reminiscent of David Bowie’s Swansong, “Black Star,” which seems to bethe sound that many British musicians seem to be heading toward. The first track, “Biscuit Town,” takesyou to a gloomy London train station, as you wait for the next train to come.
