March 2020 07 THE SILVER LINING AN ALZHEIMER’S PATIENT ENCOURAGES HIS FELLOW PATIENTS TO KEEP THEIR HOPES UP WHILE LIVING THEIR LIFE At 69 years old, Jovencio Peralta already endured numerous medical procedures since his admission to St. Luke’s in 2011. He was managed as a case of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia under the Medicine service and then he was diagnosed with dementia to consider Alzheimer’s disease by the Neurology Department. Married for 45 years and blessed with three children, Peralta is a retired taxi driver living in Quezon City. Unfortunately, the combined salaries of his three children were not enough to cover his fees in the hospital. One of his daughters is a volunteer at SLMC, which led him to discover about the Foundation. “More than three years na akong nagpapa-check dito. I like their services very much, and you will be given better services as long as you follow the rules. Basta, self discipline lang ang kailangan.” The Foundation was able to shoulder most of his expenses and is now living a better life with his family. He hopes to help raise awareness, and also help people with dementia to remain engaged in their communities and to live well. SY N E R GY
March 2020 HEARTSTRINGS GIFT GIVING TO A LUMAD COMMUNITY Working closely with the St. Luke’s Foundation, the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine was able to share the spirit of Christmas to a Lumad student community of the University of the Philippines last December 16, 2019. Members of the St. Luke’s College of Medicine community—Including officials, faculty and students –were able to socialize with indigenous students, in a heartwarming outreach activity called “Carols from the Heart.” The indigenous students live separately from their refugee parents so they can pursue their studies. They have ventured far from their own homes—ancestral lands that were vehemently taken away from them, and their schools which were destroyed by war in Mindanao. Volunteers from St. Luke’s worked together to come up with a group of 32 medical students, 6 faculty members and 7 employees. This group was able to distribute bags filled with basic necessities, food, clothes and toys. The St. Luke’s Chorale also serenaded the Lumad community with Christmas carols, uplifting everyone’s energy with the spirit of Christmas. The day ended with a medical mission where St. Luke’s doctors provided free check up and consultation to the community. 08 S Y N E R G Y
