SY N E R GY March 2022 Patient Marivic Tamayo with her husband DIVINE INTERVENTION A MOTHER OF TWO WITH RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE FINDS QUICK MEDICAL SUPPORT IN THE MIDST OF THE PANDEMIC. Marivic Tamayo was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease at the age of 13, which caused damage to the small heart valves, affecting its ability to function. She spent much of her life dealing with the illness. She enlisted in the social service program of St. Luke’s Medical Center in 2008, which has helped manage her condition. Marivic used to work as a cashier at a grocery store to support her two children, aged 18 and 12. But in 2010, the illness forced her to stay at home. Her husband worked as an online encoder but lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic. Marivic had to face another challenge when she was admitted to the hospital on August 4, 2021. The doctors told her that she needed an urgent operation. Thankfully, Marivic’s ties with the social service program of St. Luke’s Medical Center connected her to the Foundation. On August 13, 2021 she underwent a safe and successful surgery. Marivic acknowledges that timing was of the essence in this matter, and the intervention of the staff and the St. Luke’s Foundation was certainly life-saving. “Napakabait po ng mga doctors at nurses sa St. Luke’s. Kung hindi po dahil sa social services, hindi po ako ma-ooperahan,” shares Marivic. 05
