52 www.writeawaymag.co.ukLIFT OFF© Mike TurnerOne of the consistent bits of feedback I’ve received on my lyrics is that I’m pretty direct. It’s true - I tend to write with a specific message or point in mind, and lay it out pretty explicitly in the course of my songs. This is particularly true of songs I’ve written on social justice topics and world peace. One of my songwriting heroes is Bob Dylan, not least of which because of his sometimes inscrutability. He certainly makes his points, but many of his songs carry more than one interpretation, and thus the “message” becomes in part a function of the lens of the listener’s experience. I’ve wanted to be able to write like that, and so I set out to intentionally write an “inscrutable” song. I wanted to use imagery and references that told the story and made the point that I had in conceiving the song, while at the same time seeming somewhat contradictory, and being subject to more than one interpretation. The result was my latest song: “Liftoff.”Now, make no mistake: I had a definite message in mind in writing the song. But I wanted to be less direct about it than I normally am - and to see if anyone would figure out what I intended the song to be about (as well as seeing what alternate messages listeners might come up with).I’ll be interested in any feedback anyone might offer on the “message.” There’s a clue to my intent in the YouTube description - but not so blatant a clue that I think it gives the message away.I recorded the track using some new video equipment, including a photographer’s backdrop of a brick wall, and some diffusion lighting. Think of it as a “performance demo.” I’m still experimenting, but I like the look of the video and quality of the audio (recorded live using a Tascam video recorder). I have plans for a fuller production version later on for streaming release.Bio : Mike Turner is a songwriter and poet living on the US Gulf Coast. His original songs have received world-wide radio and streaming play; his songs were featured at the 2020 Monroeville Literary Festival (Alabama/US); and he was named 2017 Male Gospel Entertainer of the Year by the North America Country Music Associations International. He co-founded Music For World Peace Records and wrote/co-wrote more than 10 tracks released by the label by numerous artists. Mike’s poetry has been published in numerous print and on-line journals and anthologies; his book, “Visions and Memories,” is available on Amazon.

It is credited to Queen, but written mainly many weeks in the top 75 (five) as it did upon its by Brian May. The song chronicles the effort of frontman Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life, although his diagnosis with HIV/AIDS had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill. When the band recorded the song in 1990 Mercury’s condition had deteriorated to the point that May had concerns as to Queen, with Elton John singing lead vocals and whether he was physically capable of singing it. May recalls; “I said, ‘Fred, I don’t know if this is going to be possible to sing.’ And he went, ‘I’ll fucking do it, darling’—vodka down—and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal”.It was released as a single in the United Kingdom on 14 October 1991 in promotion for the Greatest Hits II album, just six weeks before Mercury died. Following Mercury’s death on 24 November 1991, the song re-entered the British charts and spent as original release, initially reaching a peak of 16. A live version with Elton John on vocals appeared on Queen’s Greatest Hits III album. The song was first played live on 20 April 1992, during The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, performed by the three remaining members of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi playing rhythm guitar. It has since been played live by Queen + Paul Rodgers and Queen + Adam Lambert with Rodgers citing one of the performances as the best of his career. Since its release, the song has appeared on television, film (including an operatic version in Moulin Rouge!), and has been covered by a number of artists.

58 www.writeawaymag.co.ukTime In A BottleTime In A Bottle© Jim CroceTime in a Bottle is a hit single by singer-songwriter Jim Croce. Croce wrote the lyrics after his wife Ingrid told him she was pregnant, in December 1970. It appeared on his 1972 ABC debut album You Don’t Mess Around with Jim and was featured in the 1973 ABC made-for-television movie She Lives!ABC originally did not intend to release the song as a single; but when Croce was killed in a plane crash in September 1973, its lyrics, dealing with mortality and the wish to have more time, had additional resonance. The song subsequently received a large amount of airplay as an break and told Bruce to put a couple of mics on it. He was album track and demand for a single release built. When it was eventually issued as a 7”, it became his second and final No. 1 hit. It was the third posthumous Billboard number-one hit after “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding and “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin. After the single had finished its two-week run at the top in early January 1974, the album You Don’t Mess Around with Jim became No. 1 for five weeks. In 1977, “Time in a Bottle” was used as the title for a compilation album of Croce’s love songs. The arrangement features a harpsichord that producer Tommy West discovered had been left in the mixing studio:“The night before we were going to mix, I was watching a horror movie on TV, and something must have lodged in my brain because when I walked into the studio the next day, I saw this harpsichord sitting in a corner and got an idea. A jingle company had used it on a session and in walked a couple of guys from SIR [Studio Instruments Rental] to haul it away. I asked them to take a lunch whining that it was out of tune, but I asked him to let me try something. I added two tracks of harpsichord, told the movers they could remove it, walked into Jerry’s office and asked if I could borrow the electric bass that was sitting on his couch, played that on just the second verse and the outro, and that was that! Radio compression worked in our favor on that record. It made the harpsichord blend with the two guitars in an unusual way. But we thought this record would only be an album cut.”

60 www.writeawaymag.co.ukMake Me Feel Your LoveMake Me Feel Your Love© Bob Dylan“Make You Feel My Love” is a song written by Bob Dylan for his 1997 album Time Out of Mind. It was first released commercially by Billy Joel, under the title “To Make You Feel My Love”, before Dylan’s version appeared later that same year. It has since been covered by numerous performers and has proved to be a commercial success for singers such as Clare Dunn, Adele,Teddy Swims, Garth Brooks, Shane Filan, Bryan Ferry, Kelly Clarkson, Ane Brun and Nick Knowles. It is one of the few songs to have achieved the status of becoming a “standard” in the 21st century, having been covered by more than 450 different performers. Dylan eventually released the song himself as a single.Spectrum Culture included the song on a list of “Bob Dylan’s 20 Best Songs of the ‘90s”. In an article accompanying the list, critic John Paul described it thusly: “Accompanied by a lone piano, ghostlike bass line and slightly woozy sounding organ playing sustained notes throughout, the arrangement of the song isn’t terribly remarkable, the meat of the song itself relying on Dylan’s surprisingly emotional read and jazz-like chord progression”.A 2021 Guardian article included it on a list of “80 Bob Dylan songs everyone should know”According to his official website, Dylan performed the song live over 300 times in concert between 1997 and 2019 on the Never Ending Tour. A live version performed in Los Angeles in 1998 was released on Dylan’s “Things Have Changed” CD single in 2000. The live debut occurred at Township Auditorium in Columbia, South Carolina on November 2, 1997, and the last performance took place at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. on December 8, 2019

62 www.writeawaymag.co.ukAnnie’s SongAnnie’s Song© John Denver“Annie’s Song” (also known as “Annie’s Song (You Fill Up My Senses)”) is a song in 3 4 time written and recorded by American singer-songwriter John Denver. The song was released as the lead single from his eighth studio album Back Home Again. It was his second number-one song in the United States, occupying that spot for two weeks in July 1974. “Annie’s Song” also went to number one on the Easy Listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 25 song for 1974.It went to number one in the United Kingdom, where it was Denver’s only major hit single (many of Denver’s American hits were more familiar in the UK through cover versions by other artists). Four years later, an instrumental version also became flautist James Galway’s only major British hit.“Annie’s Song” was written as an ode to Denver’s wife at the time, Annie Martell Denver. Denver “wrote this song in July 1973 in about ten-and-a-half minutes one day on a ski lift” to the top of Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, as the physical exhilaration of having “just skied down a very difficult run” and the feeling of total immersion in the beauty of the colors and sounds that filled all senses inspired him to think about his wife. Annie Denver recalls the beginnings: “It was written after John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for us. He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen mountain and the song just came to him. He skied down and came home and wrote it down... Initially it was a love song and it was given to me through him, and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer.”“The first time I heard ‘Annie’s Song,’ I told John it had the same melody as Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, Second Movement,” says Milt Okun. “He walked over to the piano, sat for an hour and came back, and the only thing remaining from Tchaikovsky was the first five notes. It was fantastic.
