I’D WALTZ YOU ‘CROSS TEXAS© Gary VaughanIf my arms could only hold you, just one more time tonight,it would make my dreams come true, to be holding you again... You would hear me softly whisper, sweet nothins’ in your ear, then I’d say to you, I love you,n’ that’s just how it’s always been... There were far too many years, that I longed to hold you tight, just waitin’ for a night like this, to renew an old romance...And when you’re in my arms, it comes to mind, an old promise made to you,‘’ I’d Waltz You ‘Cross Texas ‘’, if we could dance just one more dance...Now, I know that it may seem, that tomorrow comes too soon,so, I’ll dance with you,n’ hold you close, while I gaze into your eyes...Gone are the plans that we once made, those manyyears ago,and I recall the pain that filled our hearts, when wesaid our last goodbyes... To Waltz You ‘Cross Texas, is somethin’ that I’d do, if it meant that I’d be holdin’ you so tight...And, I’d feel like I’m in heaven, with an angel in myarms,if I could ‘’ Waltz You ‘Cross Texas ‘’, just one more time tonight...Now, the days and nights still come and go,n’ I often think of you, and what we had, long left behind, something never meant to be...The roads we chose to travel, each went their separate ways, but I hope you know, that I love you so, and that you sometimes think of me... When it comes the time, that the end is near, you’ll still be on my mind,I’ll pray that we might meet again,n’ that we’ll have just one more chance... So I can keep the vow I made to you, one made so long ago, ‘’ I’d Waltz You ‘Cross Texas ‘’, if we could dance just one more dance...Like a storybook ending, I would love to hold you tight, and I would ‘’ Waltz You ‘Cross Texas ‘’, tonight... 56 www.writeawaymag.co.ukPink Was Her Pride© Steve BoltonI’d like to begin by explaining that the idea for the track was originally inspired by a visit to Bamburgh Castle, Northumbria. Whilst walking around this ancient, historical attraction I was fascinated by the story of The Pink Lady, which is the ghost of a former princess who lived there during the period of The Wars of the Roses. I read the details from plaques that were on the walls and of wearing the pink gown the princess disappeared up onto course I researched further information from the internet, the roof of the castle, which is located on the coast and in order to create suitable song lyrics. The princess fell in love with a local young man when she was young and beautiful, of course their affair blossomed into them being inseparable lovers. There was a tragic problem however the young man was from the enemy side and sadly when the princess’s kingly father found out, grave in pink ah she felt so proud! Ever since this moment he immediately banished her lover abroad. This of course ended their loving relationship and to make matters even worse the princess’s father even told her that her lover had rocky path leading to the nearby beach. Reports even say found a new partner, fallen in love again and married. The that she’s been seen on the beach gazing silently out to sea, princess sucked on her father’s lies and believed this to be the gospel truth, she was rather naive and always believed her father’s words to be the truth. Her lover had indeed been exiled by the king, but it was nonsense that within such a short space of time he’d met someone else and married! The king after some time felt great remorse about what he’d done, owing to how depressed and withdrawn his daughter had become. Therefore to try to make amends he ordered a pink silk gown to be hand made for his daughter and when the creator came to Bamburgh Castle to personally fit the gown the princess adored her new outfit. Tragically after admiring the image of herself threw herself off onto the rocks below, the rest of course was history.Princess’s pride was her new silk gown, but alas it was also her funeral shroud, from the heights of Bamburgh Castle she played she was a bird in flight, last thoughts to her in history The Pink Lady has often been seen floating along the ancient corridors of the castle, also down the of course still hoping her lovers waiting out there, in the spirit world of course! On Sunday 8th April I’ll be curating an album launch party, regarding my new album that’s taken me four years to complete. The album will be titled Weathered not Faded and will consist of ten studio mixed tracks, the producer Neil Rigg in my mind created an excellent production job and I feel I owe him such a lot. Pink was her Pride is a track that’ll be included on the album, also the other three tracks you’ve featured in your monthly magazine. The album launch party will be held during the evening at a Leeds City Centre Bar, named The Crowd of Favours, Leeds 1. The event will commence at 19.30 hrs and I’ll be performing a couple of short sets, I’m hoping to perform the album in it’s entirety unplugged. I have another track to release from the album, titled The Silhouette Tower.

PINK WAS HER PRIDE© Steve Bolton Along ancient passages floats the pink clad lady, pride’s her shining long, dark hair, glides down that rocky path gazing silently out to sea, hoping that her lover’s waiting out there! Northumbria princess sadly Copsi was the enemy only in her father’s eyes, affair a dark secret bonded by Hadrian’s Wall. Pink Lady she felt on top of the world staring at danger made her life complete, her lover it seemed stood seven feet tall! Dear princess her dream of love not for eternity, dad in the dark it just couldn’t last. Pink Lady so sad Copsi exiled abroad, secret out the news how it travelled so fast! Naive princess she sucked on daddy’s lies, Copsi exiled and wed she’d never see him no more. Pink Lady her daddy he tried to make amends, gave her a gown of pink silk that only once she wore! Princess’s pride was her new silk gown, alas it was her Funeral Shroud. Pink lady from the heights of Bamburgh Castle she played she was a bird in flight, last thoughts to her grave in pink ah she felt so proud! Along ancient passages floats the pink clad lady, pride’s her shining long dark hair, glide’s down that rocky path gazing silently out to sea for centuries her lover’s been waiting out there. In spirit Copsi still desires the little pink lady, sadly though these ghosts they’ve still never met!Follow this link to listen...www.writeawaymag.co.uk 57STEVEBOLTONWEBSITE:https://www.lightninghector.com/?fbclid=IwAR360syT-1tUbtvr_MJwHp270pcbcgb-7n1U3mYk7P7tc6lLlcoyqDP-wbYQpMSOCIAL MEDIA:https://www.facebook.com/LightningHector/MUSIC PLATFORMS:https://open.spotify.com/search/steve%20boltonhttps://www.youtube.com/re-sults?search_query=steve+bol-ton

58 www.writeawaymag.co.ukFind Myself In A Song© Hayley McKay & Bill DiluigiFind Myself in a Song was digitally released on the 11th February ahead of Valentines day sharing my love for music! I co wrote the song with Nashville writer Bill DiLuigi, who won the prestigious American Song-writer contest. We have written together within the past two years via zoom during the pandemic. The song reflects on my upbringing, singing at parties, my Grandma’s pub and at school. The song resonates hugely with me and mentions some of my musical influences.Find Myself in a Song was recorded and produced at Mirage Studios by John P Taylor The vocals and acous-tic guitar drive the song featuring fiddle maestro Jonny Bunce, who performed on my recent single Wild West, which was shortlisted as UK Song of the year at the recent British Country Music Awards. The music video which comes out on the day of release features me in my local pub singing to camera with my Martin guitar which I got out in Nashville. I think most people can relate to a “proper pub” that isn’t modernised and ripped from its character, where people from all walks of life can meet and chat. My Grandma’s pub was very much like that and she had so much respect from the customers. The video shows footage of me at various gigs over the years and from the early years of me singing at my Grandma’s pub with my Mum next to me helping me with the microphone. It makes me proud watching the video back because I’ve never stopped singing and even though it can be a tough industry at times, I’m still performing and doing something I love.NE ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2021WILD WEST-UK SONG OF THE YEAR BCMA AWARDSNO 11 ITUNES COUNTRY CHARTS“Beautiful voice & moving lyrics, infectious pop melodies/country influences” The Telegraphwww.hayleymckay.co.uk

62 www.writeawaymag.co.ukCosmic LoveCosmic Love© Florence & The Machine“Cosmic Love” is a song by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine from their debut studio album Lungs (2009). The song was written by the band’s lead singer Florence Welch and keyboardist Isabella Summers, and produced by Paul Epworth, with additional production from Summers.“Cosmic Love” was released as the sixth (seventh, counting the re-release of “Dog Days Are Over”) and final single from Lungs on 5 July 2010. The song was critically acclaimed, with many critics calling it the best song on the album, and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song was used in a scene on British soap-opera Coronation Street in May 2018, in which the character Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward) takes his own life.Lead singer Florence Welch elaborated on the writing of the song: ‘Cosmic Love’ was a joke title, but it stuck. The most hungover I’ve ever been when writing a song. I went to Isabella Summers’s studio after having been to a party, and I was lying on the floor wanting to vomit. We were working really hard on a song and just trying to make this sh*t piano part work, and all of a sudden I hit on one note, and I’d got it. We wrote the whole song in ten minutes.Welch told The Sunday Times that it’s a song about how being in love means “you give yourself up to the dark, to being blind”.

64 www.writeawaymag.co.uk“This Charming Man” is a song by the English rock band the Smiths, written by guitarist Johnny Marr and singer Morrissey. Released as the group’s second single in October 1983 on the independent record label Rough Trade, it is defined by Marr’s jangle pop guitar riff and Morrissey’s characteristically morose lyrics, which revolve around the recurrent Smiths themes of sexual ambiguity and lust.Although only moderately successful on first release—the single peaked at number 25 on the UK Singles Chart—”This Charming Man” has been widely praised in both the music and mainstream press. Re-issued in 1992, it reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart (making it the Smiths’ biggest UK hit by chart position). In 2004, BBC Radio 2 listeners voted it number 97 on the station’s “Sold on Song Top 100” poll. Mojo magazine journalists placed the track at number 1 on their 2008 “50 Greatest UK Indie Records of All Time” feature. It was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry in 2019Morrissey deliberately used archaic language when composing the voice-over style lyrics for “This Charming Man”. His use of phrases and words such as ‘hillside desolate’, ‘stitch to wear’, ‘handsome’ and ‘charming’ are used to convey a more courtly world than the mid-Eighties north of England, and evoke a style that has, in the words of the music critic Mat Snow, “nothing to do with fashion”. Morrissey had already used the word ‘handsome’ in a song title—in “Handsome Devil”, the B-side to “Hand in Glove”—and observed in a 1983 interview with Barney Hoskyns that he used the word to “try and revive some involvement with language people no longer use. In the daily scheme of things, people’s language is so frighteningly limited, and if you use a word with more than 10 letters it’s absolute snobbery.” As with many of Morrissey’s compositions, the song’s lyrics features dialogue borrowed from a cult film. The line “A jumped-up pantry boy who never knew his place” is borrowed from the 1972 film adaptation of Anthony Shaffer’s 1970 homoerotic play Sleuth, in which Laurence Olivier plays a cuckolded author to Michael Caine’s ‘bit of rough’.Both studio versions begin with an introductory guitar riff, joined by the rhythm section. Morrissey’s vocals are first heard eight seconds into the track. His vocal melodies are diatonic, and consciously avoid blues inflections. The chorus is played twice; the first time it is followed by a brief pause, the second by the closing of the song. The rhythm section of Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce provide a beat more danceable than usual for a Smiths track. The drums were originally programmed on a Linn LM-1, under the direction of producer John Porter. Porter used the programme to trigger the sampled sounds of the live drum kit, featuring a Motownesque bassline.]Marr’s guitar part consists of single notes and thirds as opposed to strummed barre chords, and his guitar serves to creates a counter-melody throughout the song. Marr overdubbed numerous guitar parts onto the song, and in a December 1993 interview, told Guitar Player magazine:I’ll try any trick. With the Smiths, I’d take this really loud Telecaster of mine, lay it on top of a Fender Twin Reverb with the vibrato on, and tune it to an open chord. Then I’d drop a knife with a metal handle on it, hitting random strings. I used it on “This Charming Man”, buried beneath about 15 tracks of guitar ... it was the first record where I used those highlife-sounding runs in 3rds. I’m tuned up to F# and I finger it in G, so it comes out in A. There are about 15 tracks of guitar. People thought the main guitar part was a Rickenbacker, but it’s really a ‘54 Tele. There are three tracks of acoustic, a backwards guitar with a really long reverb, and the effect of dropping knives on the guitar – that comes in at the end of the chorus. The Charming ManThe Charming ManThe Smiths ©

66 www.writeawaymag.co.ukFLOURESCENT ADOLESCENTFLOURESCENT ADOLESCENTJohanna Bennett, Alex Turner ©Fluorescent Adolescent is a song by English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. It was released as the second single from their second studio album Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007). It was released on 4 July 2007 in Japan, and three days later in the United Kingdom. The song was written by Alex Turner and Johanna Bennett, Turner’s girlfriend at the time, in a hotel room prior to the recording of Favourite Worst Nightmare.“Fluorescent Adolescent” was described as a ballad about sex, ageing and nostalgia for youth. It describes a woman who dreams of her youth while her current sex life is unsatisfying and boring. The song peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart, and was the 83rd best-selling song of 2007 in the United Kingdom. “Fluorescent Adolescent” is one of the band’s most popular songs, and is frequently performed as a closer to their concerts. Kate Nash performed a cover of the song on 5 October 2007.In an interview with The Guardian, Johanna Bennett said about the song: “ We were on holiday and had cut ourselves off from everything. We were in a really quiet hotel and didn’t watch TV or listen to that much music. So as not to drive each other mad we started messing around with these words like a game, singing them to each other. It’s great to think that it came from something we did for fun on holiday. It’ll always be a good memory for Alex and I. He doesn’t usually write lyrics with other people, though I think he enjoyed it.”The music video was filmed in late April 2007 and was directed by The IT Crowd star Richard Ayoade. It features actor Stephen Graham (who previously appeared on the Scummy Man DVD and the “When the Sun Goes Down” video) as a clown. The music video premiered in the UK on 5 June 2007 on Channel 4, and was available online the next day.The music video is based around a fight between a group of clowns and a group of non-clowns at an abandoned warehouse. The presumed leaders of the two groups have a flashback showing that they were friends when they were young children. During the flashback, photos of the band as young children are shown. Throughout the fight, each group leader attempts to kill the other. As the music video climaxes, the non-clown leader tries to run over the clown leader. However the clown leader notices that the non-clown leader’s car (with the non-clown leader inside) has been leaking fuel and drops his cigarette lighter. The car quickly catches fire and the clown leader looks on as his former friend burns and the music video ends.
