How are Coil Springs Manufactured? Coil springs can be found in lots of everyday items like automobiles, garage doors, toasters, door handles, retractable pens, and clocks. Maybe you are wondering – what are coil springs? These are helical-shaped mechanical devices that can be either open-wound or closed-wound. Coil springs are designed to store mechanical potential energy to release it in a controlled manner, maintain force between two surfaces, or absorb shock. When too much force (force that exceeds their elastic limit) is applied, they often permanently distort. such as resistance to moisture and chemicals as well as tensile and high yield strengths, will influence sway material selection. These properties will also impact the design and fabrication of the spring. Steel alloys are the most popular metal for coil springs, as their mechanical properties allow for high tolerances in cases where extremely high stress, immense impacts, and heavy loads are required. Other common alloys for coil springs are stainless steel, copper-based, high-carbon, and nickel-based alloys. Cleaning and lubrication are necessary before the wire enters the drive rollers of the coiling machine. A pair of fixed coiling tools will deform the wire as it enters the machine to turn it into a coil. Following this, a pitch tool implements the spring’s pitch, turning it into the necessary coil spring design. The spring is then cut to the desired length and ejected to a conveyor belt for additional finishing operations such as tempering, grinding, peening, and coating.
