Krishnaprakash Martand Sheshnaag

Meet the Artist AS a schoolboy in Gulbarga, Krishnaprakash Martand candidly admits he was not a good student. But when it came to drawing and painting, everyone admitted he was without equal. Despite the uphill task, he was determined to make a living from his art – and evolve a style uniquely his own. A visit to the Salar Jung Museum introduced him to the famed Surpur miniature paintings – sadly a dying art today – and he knew he had found his inspiration. His works do have passing resemblance, but Krishnaprakash specialises in ink-and-paper 'line art' that whimsically reimages heavily-ornamented gods and goddesses drawn from Indian mythology. He prefers not to use a pencil or a rubber and only lifts his micron waterproof pen as he moves from one section of his painting to another, lines gracefully curving across the page. Krishnaprakash also runs a free school for slum children, that is, a second one coming up in Gulbarga. The first was set up in nearby Shahapur by his father after retirement. But with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Gulbarga school building stays unfinished, while countrywide exhibitions where he sold so many of his works don’t happen anymore. So funding has dried up. Today not all are supportive though as his father had been. Why Artistan Series 1 don’t you set up a small grains or cloth shop? they ask. But it seems those fine flowing lines have wrapped themselves tight round Krishnaprakash and made him captive once and for all. A HUNDRED HANDS is a charitable trust set up in 2010 to unearth and grow the incredible potential of Indian traditional crafts and support the ‘artistans’ economically. All donations get routed to them.
