PREFACE The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) fosters a learner-centered environment that puts the student at the heart of the educational experience. NBCCD’s officially approved document, the Curriculum Standard, details specific learning out- comes necessary for a student to be certified. It also assures uniformity of the delivery of a program’s content. The Curriculum Standard is an introduction to the program which includes the program’s critical performance, a program description, program learning outcomes, and the program’s potential career opportunities. This is followed by informa- tion on duration, credits, admission requirements, advanced placement, certification, articulations, and prior learning assessment and recognition. This document also contains a program delivery sequence and the course profiles with specific course learning outcomes and grading basis. In addition, the Curriculum Standard is used as a tool for revision and evaluation of the program and for the promotion of transfer agreements with other post-secondary institutions. NBCCD welcomes all comments and inquiries re- garding the implementation of this program and the use of this document. PROJECT A | POST GRADUATE POP-UP SHOP IN CANMORE, ALBERTA

ALUMNI PROFILE Jade Ansley METALSMITH OWNER, PROJECT A For me, this program was about soul searching — finding your passion for business within your passion for your craft. I realized you have to continue learning and it's up to you to find success in your field. You can't wait for success to come to you, you need to start today. And so I did! This year I opened a retail space in Canmore, Alberta called Project A, showcasing Canadian talent. In particular, it supports a growing community of emerging designers and makers. Encouragement and retail exposure are so important at the beginning of an artist's career. Project A gives a professional platform for makers who are pursuing their dream of making a living as a creative individual. This program gave me the entrepreneurial focus and business management skills to make my dream a reality.

ALUMNI PROFILE Jennifer McInnis-Wharton CERAMICIST STUDIO TECH | BANFF CENTRE FOR THE ARTS The program offered me the opportunity for additional time to become self-sufficient as an artist while providing me with mentor- ship and support. My support network at the College gave me the extra confidence I needed to branch further out into the surrounding art community. I grew leaps and bounds throughout my year and my confidence skyrocketed. I was able to set goals that made me a little bit uncomfortable, and the program held me accountable for my own learning. The lecture series was an incredible chance to hear different ways I could in- corporate creative goals into my life. Listening to people talk about their challenges and how they overcame them was also enlightening. The intensive one-on-one mentorship helped me to consciously work through my thought processes and grow with intention. I felt I had a safe space to share openly and found conversations led to either talking myself in a circle toward my own conclusion or being be- stowed with insightful advice at just the right time. This in turn led to a much stronger sense of personal self-awareness.

GREG KLASSEN | DISTRACTIONS

ALUMNI PROFILE Greg Klassen PHOTOGRAPHER As I moved from science into art (I had absolutely no prior formal visual arts training), my goal was twofold: the first was to simply immerse myself in the art world and the second to prepare myself for my goal of applying to a Master of Fine Arts in Photography. 1. The College gave me my first solo show in 2009. Since then I have been in nearly forty solo and group shows. NBCCD provid- ed me with the tools and the confidence to wade into this very competitive and rewarding world. 2. As a direct result of the program, I was chosen as the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Emerging Artist of the Year in 2010. I can think of no greater compliment to the College’s abilities to nurture their students. 3. Again, thanks to this program, I was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts program at Emily Carr Art College in Vancouver. 4. Since moving to British Columbia, I am now producing and working steadily (thanks for all the boring but crucial instructions on the business side of being an artist), making a modest income working for the Salt Spring Island Arts Council as their grant writer. So yeah! I wholeheartedly endorse the program and what it can give you. One important caveat to remember: the program requires one additional ingredient—you need to believe in yourself. And the support I got from everyone at the College, including my fellow stu- dents, was absolutely essential for me when I still doubted my ability to do what I set out to do. I owe them a lot.

ALUMNI PROFILE Samaqani Cocahq (Natalie Sappier) VISUAL ARTIST, MUSICIAN, PLAYWRIGHT Seven years after graduating with a diploma in Textiles Design from NBCCD, I devoted a year to mapping my career and learning the business side of art. The program offered dedicated time to reflect, dream and map the way to reach those dreams. Being true to myself, my journey needed to lead me to the life I wanted to live. In a circle of teachers and peers, who were also on a journey, I recognized my strengths and many things I needed to learn. I truly discovered the artist I wanted to be. What the program taught me: 1. Clarity of path, making realistic steps to your goals, do not overwhelm yourself, be patient and make the journey a positive experience, do not be hard on yourself — but do not be easy. 2. Mentorship, be around the ones who you can learn from, be around the ones who are doing something that inspires you. 3. Be confident in yourself and your creative process and learn to share that in words and in speaking. This helps you with networking. 4. Be aware of your lifestyle, money, relationships and your surroundings. My biggest realization is that no goal is too big! If you visualized it, it is already being created. As an artist who creates through Mind, Body and Spirit, with every step and collaboration, talking and sharing are central to my practice.
