guide to levelsThere are many ways to study for higher qualifications and if you want to furtheryour education it doesn’t have to be at a University. City College offer a range ofHigher Education qualifications, which are detailed below. Level 6 – Honours Degree An Honours Degree generally involves studying for 3 or 4 years. Some degree courses include a year for work experience. You can top up a HND qualification to an Honours Degree which takes one year full-time or one and a half years part-time. Level 5 – FOUNDATION Degree A Foundation Degree combines academic and vocational study related to the specific subject you are studying. They are designed in partnership with employers and universities, providing you with the relevant skills, ability and knowledge. Completing a Foundation Degree will give you a strong academic qualification as well as practical experience to enter employment or further studies. Level 5 – Higher National Diploma (HND) The HND is a nationally recognised qualification that is usually vocationally based and is equivalent to the first two years at university. Studying for a HND will include a variety of theory and practical work and can lead you directly into employment or into the final year of a full-time honours degree. Level 4 – Higher National Certificate (HNC) The HNC is often over one or two years with part-time options available. It is a vocationally based qualification that is equivalent to the first year of university. financial support Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to apply for financial assistance to support you during your course at College, whether you are studying full or part-time. Higher Education Loans You may be able to borrow money to help pay for your college tuition fees and to help with living costs. You might also be able to get extra money on top of this if you’re on a low income, are disabled or have children for example. The Student Loans Company can provide loans and grants to students studying their first degree or other higher education courses to help finance the course fees. The fees will automatically be paid by the Student Loans Company directly to the College. TUITION FEE LOAN & MAINTENANCE LOAN FOR LIVING COSTS To assist you with your tuition fees you can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (non-income assessed) and a Maintenance Loan for your accommodation and living costs whilst you are studying. There are no up-front tuition fees with a student loan and you will only start to repay the loan after you leave the course and start working.
