Chanakya Niti 1.01 प्रणम्य शिरसा विष्णुं त्रैलोक्याधिपतिं प्रभुम् । नानाशास्त्रोद्धृतं वक्ष्ये राजनीतिसमुच्चयम् ॥1ll Praṇamya śirasā viṣṇuṃ trailokyādhipatiṃ prabhum । Nānāśāstroddhṛtaṃ vakṣye rājanītisamuccayam ॥ Humbly bowing down before the almighty Lord Sri Vishnu, the Lord of the three worlds, I recite maxims of the science of political ethics (niti) selected from the various shatras. तीनो लोकों के स्वामी सर्वशक्तिमान भगवान विष्णु को नमन करते हुए मैं एक राज्य के लिए नीति शास्त्र के सिद्धांतों को कहता हूँ। मैं यह सूत्र अनेक शास्त्रों का आधार ले कर कह रहा हूँ।

Chanakya Niti 1.02 अधीत्येदं यथाशास्त्रं नरो जानाति सत्तमः । धर्मोपदेशविख्यातं कार्याकार्यं शुभाशुभम् ॥2ll adhītyedaṃ yathāśāstraṃ naro jānāti sattamaḥ । dharmopadeśavikhyātaṃ kāryākāryaṃ śubhāśubham ॥ That man who by the study of these maxims from the satras acquires a knowledge of the most celebrated principles of duty, and understands what ought and what ought not to be followed, and what is good and what is bad, is most excellent. जो व्यक्ति शास्त्रों के सूत्रों का अभ्यास करके ज्ञान ग्रहण करेगा उसे अत्यंत वैभवशाली कर्तव्य के सिद्धांत ज्ञात होंगे। उसे इस बात का पता चलेगा कि किन बातों का अनुशरण करना चाहिए और किनका नहीं। उसे अच्छाई और बुराई का भी ज्ञात होगा और अंततः उसे सर्वोत्तम का भी ज्ञान होगा।

अनभ्यासे विषं शास्त्रम्। anabhyāse viṣaṃ śāstram। Knowledge without practice is like poison. अभ्यास के बिना ज्ञान विष की तरह होता है।

Chanakya Niti 1.11 जानीयात्प्रेषणेभृत्यान् बान्धवान्व्यसनाऽऽगमे । मित्रं चाऽऽपत्तिकालेषु भार्यां च विभवक्षये ॥११॥ Jānīyātprēṣaṇē bhr̥ tyānbāndhavān vyasanāgamē। Mitraṁ cāpattikālēṣu bhāryāṁ ca vibhavakṣayē॥ Test a servant while in the discharge of his duty, a relative in difficulty, a friend in adversity, and a wife in misfortune. नौकर की परीक्षा तब करें जब वह कर्त्तव्य का पालन न कर रहा हो, रिश्तेदार की परीक्षा तब करें जब आप मुसीबत मे घिरें हों, मित्र की परीक्षा विपरीत परिस्थितियों मे करें और जब आपका वक्त अच्छा न चल रहा हो तब पत्नी की परीक्षा करे।

Chanakya Niti 1.12 आतुरे व्यसने प्राप्ते दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुसङ् कटे । राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स बान्धवः ॥12ll Āturē vyasanē prāptē durbhikṣē śatrusaṅkaṭē । Rājadvārē śmaśānē ca yastiṣṭhati sa bāndhavaḥ ॥ He is a true friend who does not forsake us in time of need, misfortune, famine, or war, in a king’s court, or at the crematorium (smasana). आतुर होने पर, दुःख प्राप्त होने पर, काल पड़ने पर, शत्रुओं से संकट आने पर, राजा के समीप और शमशान पर जो साथ रहता है वही बन्धु है।

Chanakya Niti 1.13 यो ध्रुवाणि परित्यज्य अध्रुवं परिषेवते । ध्रुवाणि तस्य नश्यन्ति चाध्रुवं नष्टमेव हि ॥13ll Yō dhruvāṇi parityajya adhruvaṁ pariṣēvatē। Dhruvāṇi tasya naśyanti cādhruvaṁ naṣṭamēva hi॥ He who gives up what is imperishable for that which perishable, loses that which is imperishable; and doubtlessly loses that which is perishable also. जो निश्चित को छोड़कर अनिश्चित का सहारा लेता है, उसका निश्चित भी नष्ट हो जाता है। अनिश्चित तो स्वयं नष्ट होता ही है।

श्लोके न वा तदर्धेन तदर्धार्धाक्षरेण वा। अबन्ध्यं दिवसं कु र्याद्दानाध्ययनकर्मभिः॥ ०२-१३ ślokena vā tadardhena tadardhārdhākṣareṇa vā। abandhyaṃ divasaṃ kuryāddānādhyayanakarmabhiḥ॥ Let not a single day pass without your learning a verse, half a verse, or a fourth of it, or even one letter of it; nor without attending to charity, study and other pious activity. ऐसा एक भी दिन नहीं जाना चाहिए जब आपने एक श्लोक, आधा श्लोक, चौथाई श्लोक, या श्लोक का के वल एक अक्षर नहीं सीखा या आपने दान अभ्यास या कोई पवित्र कार्य नहीं किया।

Chanakya Niti 3.08 रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना विशालकु लसम्भवाः। विद्याहीना न शोभन्ते निर्गन्धाः किंशुका यथा॥ ०३-०८ rūpayauvanasampannā viśālakulasambhavāḥ। vidyāhīnā na śobhante nirgandhāḥ kiṃśukā yathā॥ Though one be endowed with beauty and youth and born in noble families, yet without education they are like the Palasa flower which is void of sweet fragrance. रूप और यौवन से सम्पन्न, उच्च कु ल में उत्पन्न होकर भी विद्याहीन मनुष्य सुगन्धहीन फू ल के समान होते हैं और शोभा नहीं देते।

Chanakya Niti 4.15 अनभ्यासे विषं शास्त्रमजीर्णे भोजनं विषम् । दरिद्रस्य विषं गोष्ठी वृद्धस्य तरुणी विषम् ॥ anabhyāse viṣaṃ śāstramajīrṇe bhojanaṃ viṣam। daridrasya viṣaṃ goṣṭhī vṛddhasya taruṇī viṣam।। Scriptural lessons not put into practice are poison; a meal is poison to him who suffers from indigestion; a social gathering is poison to a poverty stricken person; and a young wife is poison to an aged man. जिस अध्यात्मिक सीख का आचरण नहीं किया जाता वह जहर है। जिसका पेट ख़राब है उसके लिए भोजन जहर है। निर्धन व्यक्ति के लिए किसी सामाजिक या व्यक्तिगत कार्यक्रम में एकत्र होना जहर है।

Chanakya Niti 4.16 त्यजेद्धर्मं दयाहीनं विद्याहीनं गुरुं त्यजेत् । त्यजेत्क्रोधमुखीं भार्यां निःस्नेहान्बान्धवांस्त्यजेत् ॥ Tyajeddharmam dayāhīnaṃ vidyāhīnaṃ guruṃ tyaje। Tyajetkrodhamukhīṃ bhāryāṃ niḥsnehān bāndhavāṃstyaje।। Give up those who lack principles, who lack compassion, who are without knowledge and a teacher. Give up a wife who speaks in anger, and relatives who are without affection. जो धर्मरहित हो, जो दयाहीन हो, जो विद्याहीन गुरु हो, उसे छोड़ दें। गुस्से में बोलने वाली पत्नी, अनुराग से रहित रिश्तेदार भी त्याग दें।

यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते निघर्षणच्छे दनतापताडनैः। तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुषः परीक्ष्यते त्यागेन शीलेन गुणेन कर्मणा॥ ०५-०२ yathā caturbhiḥ kanakaṃ parīkṣyate nigharṣaṇacchedanatāpatāḍanaiḥ। tathā caturbhiḥ puruṣaḥ parīkṣyate tyāgena śīlena guṇena karmaṇā॥ As gold is tested in four ways by rubbing, cutting, heating and beating – so a man should be tested by these four things: his renunciation, his conduct, his qualities, and his actions. जिस तरह सोने की परख घिसने से, तोडने से, गरम करने से और पिटने से होती है, वैसे हि मनष्य की परख विद्या, शील, गुण और कर्म से होती है।
