Colonial began operations in the early 1900s in Philadelphia, PA. With overone-million residents, Philadelphia was the country’s largest city. As its electrical demandsincreased through the middle of the century, Colonial responded and flourished.Joe Bellwoar took control in 1972 and grew the business. He was legendary for hisincredible service, and it was not uncommon for Joe to go above and beyond for customersafter working hours. His motto was always, “Service after the Sale”.In 1976, Colonial moved its operations west of the city to King of Prussia, PA. With suburbansprawl taking over farmland, Colonial was poised for the construction boom of the ‘70s and‘80s. The next generation of the Bellwoar family arrived at Colonial in the early 1980s. Bythe end of that decade, the company had grown to $20 million in sales and had about 50employees. The company leapt into the computer-age, well ahead of other distributors, making inventory control, order entry, and purchasing virtually paperless. The 1990s werehuge years for Colonial as Jay, David, Steve and Peter Bellwoar took over running thecompany and sales grew to nearly $70 million.Today there are roughly 600 employees throughout Colonial Electric, its branches spanacross 6 states on the East Coast, and the company continues to grow at nearly $280 million. The Showroom Division of Colonial Electric is powered by excellence and has a passionfor customer service. The same great values which help Colonial to be successful also runthrough this division. Whether you need a 12-light rock crystal chandelier by Swarovski,or a 400 amp breaker, Colonial is here for you. With so much more than lights, Colonial’sshowroom division is dedicated to help you with any project, big or small.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING 101WHY LANDSCAPE LIGHTING? • Provides an aesthetic beauty to your home and surroundings after the sun goes down. • Increases the value of your home. • Expands your outdoor living space. –– Creates a well lit area that can be useful after dark. –– Adds hours to your outdoor activity — enjoy your landscape 24 hours a day. • Creates a safe environment. –– Illuminated architectural features, walkways, driveways, steps, decks, and stairs ensure safe passage from one point to another. –– Adds security. • A well lit home can be an excellent deterrent to any potential intruder. • Most importantly — a HUGE business opportunity.WHY USE A 12 VOLT SYSTEM? • Safe to use and operate. –– With a lower voltage amount, there is virtually no risk of injury from shock. –– You do not need a license to install. • Easy installation. –– In most cases, wires do not need to be buried deeply (minimum of 6” deep), equaling less tedious work. • Fixture locations are flexible and adaptable. –– Easy to move as landscape matures. • Energy efficient and economical to operate. –– Provide excellent light output for the wattage used. A low voltage lamp will provide more light output/watt than a 120 volt lamp, generally in a 3 to 1 ratio. LED’s consume about 75% less energy than incandescent sources.VOLTAGE (120V)  vs.  LOW VOLTAGE (12V)Operates at 120 volt, matching the Operates at 12 volt, converting standardpower supply of most US homes. 120w power supply with a transformer.Requires permanent installation with Does not carry a high risk of shock, so thereburied cables to meet safety code. is no need to bury cables.Utilizes larger lamps and fixtures. Features (12v-15v) multi-tap outputs and circuit breaker protection. A modular timer and photocell is available. Extension: 5.5\" Certification: C-US Wet Rated Voltage: 120vHOW TO CHOOSE A TRANSFORMERSTEP 1: Add the total lamp wattage your system requires and size your transformer accordingly. For LED, add the total VA (volt-amps) for all LED fixtures Example: (4) x 12w lamps and (2) x 36w lamps = 120w LED: (4) x 7.2VA and (2) x 10.6VA = 50WSTEP 2: Choose a transformer powerful enough to handle the total wattage and still have some extra capacity. It is recommended the total wattage used stays approximately 15%-20% below the maximum rating of the transformer. Example: To accommodate 120w, our 150w transformer would work, but our 300w transformer would allow for adding more fixtures in the future. Tip: Choose a larger transformer to accommodate future lights. 11

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING 101TRANSFORMER INSTALLATIONIt is advisable to centrally locate the transformer in the lighting zone. • Helps eliminate unnecessary lengths on wire runs. • Helps control excessive voltage drop. • A transformer can be mounted inside* or outside. • Must be mounted one foot above the ground. * Only Pro-Series Transformers are rated for indoor use. NEC requires conduit to be used when running wires through walls.DESIGN & APPLICATIONThe correct way to create the lighting job is to ask your customers the following: • What do you want to light? (key objects) • How do you want to light it? (application techniques) • What power system do you want? (12v) • What do you want to light it with? (fixture and lamp) • Qualify the customer. (professional grade system)PLANNING LAYOUTS • List with your customers the most important object to be lit and ask key questions: What? How? Power? Lamp/Head? Find your focal point and build around it. • The amount of light determines the spacing. Remember, we want to create shadows — except for long drives or paths, even illumination might not give the best results. • For driveways, take into account traffic flow and children when placing fixtures. • Install your transformers after the fixtures are in place and then make the final connections. • Think of landscape lighting as “outdoor track” — same principles. • Ultimate goal — create mystery, shadows and contrast by varying lamp intensity and distance between fixtures. • Less light is more — smaller wattage, shielded lenses and spacing. • Main objective the key — then application — build from there. • Difference between safety/security lighting and low-level landscape lighting. • Take the demo bag to your customer’s house — install and let them play with the system. They will buy. • Get a view of the house during daylight — do not rely on plans or photos. 12

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING 101HOW TO INSTALL YOUR LOW VOLTAGE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING STEP 1: Sketch your home and grounds, deck, fence, shrubs, trees etc., in scale, on a large piece of graph paper. STEP 2: Pick the focal points that you want to be the center of attention (a large statue, tree, fountain, etc.). Choose several focal points and use the remaining lighting as accents (path lights, wall brackets, step lighting, etc.). STEP 3: Select the fixtures you want to use and place them on your plan. Note: To calculate spacing and proper lamp wattages to achieve desired effect, place fixtures in zones or groups. Deck Lighting Path Lighting Uplighting STEP 4a: Select location of transformer on your plan. Calculate the size of the transformer you need by adding all of the individual fixtures’ wattages together. Transformer Zone 1 — 3 fixtures @ 25w = 75w Zone 2 — 3 fixtures @ 50w = 150w Zone 3 — 4 fixtures @ 50w = 200w Zone 1 + Zone 2 + Zone 3 = 425w To accommodate 425w, choose our 600w transformer. 18

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING 101STEP 4b: For LED fixtures, calculate the size of the transformer you need by adding all of the individual fixtures’ LED wattages together. Transformer Zone 1 — 3 fixtures @ 3.9VA = 11.7VA      3 fixtures @ 8.8VA = 26.4VA    Zone 1 Total  38.1VA Zone 3 — 4 fixtures @ 8.8VA = 35.2VA Zone 1 + Zone 2 = 73.3VA To accommodate 73.3VA, choose our 150w transformer.STEP 5: Determine the voltage drop of each zone. LANDSCAPE LIGHTING 101STEP 7: Attach fixtures by splicing into main supply cable. • Fill wire nut with silicone. • Twist wires and screw on wire nut. • Wrap with electrical tape. • Allow extra wire at the base of fixture and bury to allow for relocation or adjustment.STEP 8: When using an outdoor receptacle, 12\" minimum hang transformer at least 12” above the ground. Knockouts are provided in the transformer case if direct wiring is required. Attach cable and adjust photo control so that it will not be affected by artificial light. • Run cables exiting the transformer through conduit and down into ground, creating a nice, neat, professional installation. • Plug into a GFCI protected outlet.STEP 9: Slice through the sod with a spade or make a trough in the mulch to run the cable. Place the cable into the spade opening, making sure the cable is buried a minimum of 6” into the ground. Note: Bury extra wire at base of each fixture to allow for repositioning.Step 10: Turn the transformer on at night and reposition fixtures if necessary for optimum effect.Step 11: Secure the fixture in place. If staked, press the stake into the ground until the post rests at ground level. If secured to a deck, wall, fence or tree, use screws (stainless steel for trees) and secure cable hidden from view. Enjoy your beautiful landscape lighting! 20
