Here comes The Bride © Eric Uys B rides Essence had the privilege of interviewing one of Cape Towns top wedding photographers Jan Theron. Jan please tell us about Jan Theron yourself. A:I was born in Paarl and I have been living in the Western Cape all my life. I am very much a social person who loves get- togethers with friends. I love good food & wine, the outdoors, camping, hiking & the beach. I love music and good movies. I love to cook and entertain my friends around a cozy fire. Last but not least, I love photography - it runs in my blood– it’s part of my DNA. Where did you grow up? A:I grew up in Cape Town. Where are you based and what geographical area do you cover? A:I am based in Durbanville, where I have a permanent studio that has been in existence for the last 22 years. I cover assignments in the Western Cape as well as the UK, Europe and Greece. What made you choose photography as a profession? A: I could never imagine a world where I would not be able to create photographically. 6 Brides Essence.com - Issue 10 Photographs © Jan Theron

did you study photography? A:Yes, I studied photography at the University of Stellenbosch. It is a 4-year course and I received my degree in photography in December 1989. When did your passion in photography first begin and what do you enjoy most about it? A:My passion for photography started when I got my first camera at the age of 14. What I enjoy most about it is the fact that I can portray life the way that I see it and experience it. How long have you been a wedding photographer? A:I have been a wedding photographer for the last 22 years, since 1991. How many weddings do you photograph per year? A:45, on average What sets you apart from other photographers? A: The way in which I connect with my clients. I capture my clients’ souls, not just their faces. Are you planning on doing something different in this years wedding season? A: Yes, most certainly. I do something different every year. What are the latest photographic trends and have you implemented any of them? A:Trends can be dangerous because it can go out of fashion much quicker than it came into fashion, so to speak. I do adapt to changing times but I don’t necessarily implement the latest trends.I have my own “look” and my own “style” and I implement this in such a way so as to ensure that my images are “timeless”. What do you offer in your bridal packages? A: I offer an unique kind of creativity. My packages include my time as well as all the edited high resolution images on disc. Storybook albums, enlargements & canvas prints are optional and can be ordered at any stage after the wedding, or the clients can produce these directly from their high resolution images on their discs themselves. Nov/Dec 2013 Brides Essence Magazine 7

do you take pre-wedding photographs? A: Yes, provided that a couple book their pre-wedding shoot, or engagement shoot well in advance. do you have any advice for Brides on how to choose the right photographer? A: Arrange a personal face- to-face meeting with your photographer, if possible, in order to firstly study their portfolios and very importantly to get to know the person (the human being) behind the photographer. Are you able to match a bride’s budget? A: Yes – provided that it is a REALISTIC budget!! do you have a favorite pose for Brides? A: Most certainly not. I do not believe in following a “formula” or a “recipe” while photographing a wedding. I always try to be innovative and, very importantly, I try to shoot according to my client’s personality & character. What works for one person does not necessarily work for another. It is very important for me not to have a favourite pose for brides but to rather create a unique and individual pose for each bride. Such a pose would be “custom made” for them and not just a cliché carried over from one wedding to another. 8 Brides Essence.com - Issue 10 Photographs © Jan Theron

What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera? A:Available light! What is your preferred equipment brand? A: Nikon What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot? A: One single external light source and a reflector. if you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why? A: The Nikon 70-200 mm f2.8 - because it is one of the best lenses that I have handled. How important is Photoshop in your final images? A: It is important, in order to “fine- tune” the product in such a way that it is created with my own unique and individual “artistic stamp”. Over the next few pages are a few of Jans photograhs. I was ushered through the reception and taken through to the Equinox Spa where I was introduced to Sunette van der Merwe, the Equinox Spa manager, and Aneeqa Said from Red Carpet Concepts who put this entire day together along with her assistant Melissa Mann. Floral Trends Summer 2013 Lorraine Hirst of Lol’s Flowers takes us through the latest trends in wedding flowers: Garden roses Many brides are now requesting large-head or cabbage roses for their flower arrangements. Also known as “garden roses”, these gorgeous flowers tend to open very quickly and get their name from their cabbage-like appearance. They can get quite large once in bloom and are a good substitute for the peony if you want to achieve a similar look and “fullness”. If you are more of a traditionalist however, have no fear, the classic rose isn’t going anywhere! Adding a personal touch to stem wrappings Bouquets remain the most important and personal arrangement of the day and brides are now including little mementos into the stem wrapping to make their bouquet extra special. Consider adding sentimental tokens like lockets or brooches, or save a strip of ribbon or lace from your dress – not only will it give your bouquet special meaning but it will tie the whole look together. Stem Wrapping Taken by Gavin Withers Photography Supplied by: Lol’s Flowers Using succulents in your bouquet The use of succulent plants in bouquets has been gaining popularity and it’s easy to see why. The thick fleshy “petals” of succulents come in a variety of colours; the succulents can survive happily out of water for a few weeks (allowing you to make the bouquet in advance), and the succulents can be replanted after the wedding – perfect for “green-conscious” brides. In fact different kinds of greenery and “fillers” (e.g. dried baby’s breath and lavender) in general are becoming more popular.
