Grand Beach, Burin Peninsula, NL — Lorne Hiscock AUGUST 16 - 22, 2020/THE NEWFOUNDLAND HERALD 31 ‘THE PICTURE’ Dear Editor, My brother, Murdock and I were beach combing in Grand Beach. Run- ning parallel to the beach is a marsh, so my brother decided to check for bakeapples while I continued to beach comb. So we gathered mussel shells, drift- wood, a flat rock along with another shell. Results, “THE PICTURE” — Lorne Hiscock, Lewisporte,NL LORNE HISCOCK PHOTO NFLDHERALD.com

No one really believed that Jake had shot him- self. When authorities went to question Clara, she was nowhere to be found. A month after the shooting she was located in Chihuahua, Mexico. She claimed that during the five days Jake was in hospital she was urged and financed by his political friends to flee to Mexico to avoid a scandal. Now that Jake had died she was willing to return and tell the whole story. Upon her arrival in Ardmore, Clara was arrested and charged with Jake’s murder. Clara told her accident-self de- fence story from the witness stand, but there was other conflicting evidence. Dr. Walter Hardy stated, “As Jake lay dying he told me that Clara, the girl about to be put out of his life, shot him ruthlessly as she caressed him.” CHEERING THE VERDICT The jury chose to believe that Clara had acted in self defence. It took them only 39 minutes to bring in a verdict of not guilty. The courtroom crowd rose as one and cheered the verdicr. Clara was asked to star in a movie portraying her life with Jack Hamon. She travelled ro Hollywood and started the movie which was never completed, but the venture wasn’t all in vain. She married her director, John W. Gorman, in 1921. But, alas, poor Clara, always unlucky in love, divorced Gorman four years later. NFLDHERALD.com
