Dr. MacGregor and Carrie were directed to the bedroom by trusting John Wesley. An hour later they emerged and advised Mr. Sparling, “Everything was just fine.” 34 THE NEWFOUNDLAND HERALD/DECEMBER 15 - 21, 2019 *Crime Flashback Images are used for reenactment purposes only and might not be historically accurate.

From then on Carrie suffered from DECEMBER 15 - 21, 2019/THE NEWFOUNDLAND HERALD 35 a series of minor ailments. The doctor came every second week or so and never failed to cure what ailed her. After several months had passed, Dr. MacGregor confided to his best friend Xenophon A. Boomhower, who lived in the neighbouring village of Bad Axe, that he suspected John Wesley Sparling had Bright’s disease. A few months later John Wesley was confined to his bed. Despite Dr. Macgregor’s care, the poor man was called to the great dairy farm in the sky. A DEAR FAMILY FRIEND The doctor, who was now considered a dear family friend by the four boys and something altogether different by Carrie, met with the Sparling family. He advised the boys to take out life insurance. Con- sidering the untimely demise of their father, the four lads thought it good ad- vice. By coincidence, the doctor’s father was an insurance agent back in London. He sold them Sun Life Assoc. of Canada policies. A year later Dr. MacGregor informed his friend Boomhower that Pete Sparling had acute pancreatitis. Everyone was shocked. Poor Pete. He was laid to rest beside his dad less than a year after the elder Sparling had departed this mortal coil. Distraught, Carrie decided to sell the farm and purchase a smaller one in Huron County, a stone’s throw from Dr. MacGregor’s office in Ubly. Coinciden- tal with the Sparlings’ move, good friend Xenophon Boomhower was appointed County Prosecutor. NEXT WEEK/PART 2: Dr. MacGregor continues his torrid love affair with Carrie Wesley.
