In his column Fur- long goes once again blundering down his memory lane to an incident which happened to him in London, England. Apparently when poor old Jim went looking for an apartment a black wom- an slammed the door in Jim’s face, clear- ly not wanting Jim for a tenant though valiant Jim tries to make possible excus- es for her rude behaviour. Furlong then goes on to agonize why he describes the woman as black; why include that in de- scribing her (maybe cause it is true?) The cautionary tale apparently is that by so describing her as black that is racist! Well let us take this decrepit logic fur- ther: why describe the woman as, well, a woman? Is that not sexist? Maybe Jim should sanitize the entire story to com- fort his liberal sensibilities: the person who slammed the door in his face was a white man, of straight proclivities, wear- ing a MAGA hat as an early Trump sup- porter. Furlong would feel so much bet- ter because the liberal narrative is we all should know Trump supporters like to slam doors in well meaning people’s fac- es. However the truth would not fare so well. For a full week, although several teenagers knew the Olives had been murdered, no one told anyone in authority. Finally, a business acquaintance of the Olives con- tacted the police. SENTENCED TO DEATH When questioned, Marlene initially denied any knowledge of her parents’ whereabouts. Then she started making up stories before finally telling the truth. A search of the barbecue pit uncovered tiny bits of bone, the largest of these being a two-inch human vertebrae. Both young people were arrested and charged with murder. Chuck Riley, 19 at the time of the murders, was found guilty and sentenced to death. While he was on San Quentin’s Death Row, capital punishment was abolished and Chuck’s sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
