FOREWORD The publication of S+. Pa+rick's Annual again after a lapse ofseveral years will give pleasure to the Christian Brothers' manyfriends and ardent admirers of their grand work for Catholic Edu-cation. lf will also make the work of st. Patrick's college morewidely known, and in doing so will confer a benefit on those whoare newly introduced to fhat work. The parents of those boys who have been fortunate enough toreceive their education at St. Patrick's College are constantly ex-pressing iheir graiitude to the Christian Broihers. I wish to expressmy sincere gratitude, too, because I realise what a greai asset tothis diocese si. Patrick's College has been and will ctntinue to be. The chrisiian Brothers may point with iust pride to quite anumber of their past pupils who occupy positions of importanceand responsibility in various spheres of life-religious, proiessional, civic, poli+ical, commercial, sporting-and who readily acknowledgeihat their success is due in large measure to lhe training thJyreceived in early years from the Christian Brothers. I The Annual will serve to recall to the minds of present and pastpupils, and many others, too, the importance and excellence of thework ihe Christian Brothers are doing in educaiing Caiholic boys, and I arn pleased to commend very highly anything fhai serves sucha good purpose.Besiowing my blessing on Brothers and pupils, present and past, -- 1-.-71ttmcl, Y'/ \avLeE, BISHOP OF GERALDTON

In extending thev/orm congrctulotions ol oll crssocioted with the College, we proy thot youond your work wiil be qbundontly blessed.IDEATSThis onnuol gothering of porents, pupils, teochers ond friends ol theCollege sets us inevitobly thinking of the pi.rlpose ol our existence. V/e conscorcely hope to succeed in our tosk, unless we hcrve o cleor mind on theclirection which we should be toking ond whcrt should be ou.r ultimote gools.Such cr consiont re-ossessment ol our oims is necessory in the light of our Ior q scole oJ morol volues thotresponsibilities. The Cotholic school stondsore immutoble. There is no ploce Ior o merely relotive morolity-relqtive totrme, circumstqnces ond possing foshion. This is only expediency. Thespirituol degrodotion ond spirituol bonkruptcy thot foliow Jrom on \"qccommo-doted\" morolity were never more qpporent thon in certoin world events o{ihe pcst yeor.It would be {olly ond complocency to cloim the Cotholic school hosremcrined oltogether immune from the prevoilingr morql breqkdown. But, ctleost, Cotholic Educcrtion is prepored to proless open concern Ior obsoluternorol vcrlues. It is our responsibility ond yours (the porents) to see thotthis prolession o{ belief in the Christion morol code is something more thonrnere iip service. Nothinq is cleqrer in the present situqtion thon thot morolity connotexist without o religiou's foith. It must hove on ultimote point ol referencein Fcith. Mere sociol or voguely ethicol sonctions ore not enough. This iscnly o woy ol soying thot o positive reilgious Ioith is the only ground onv, rhich we con ottempt to construct o sound morol code. Porents, ond indeedthe Stote too, expect the school to inculcqte sound morql principles. It Iollowsthen thot Home ond Stote ond School ore committed to providing some Iormol religious formqtion, no motter in whcrt light they moy see their obligotions.Humon conduct is morol conduct oniy when mqn qcts in occordoncer, vith his true noture. Presuming o b!-lief in God the Creotor, we ocknowledgethot mon's noture is given him by God. It is o gilt ond m.on must use theqift wiseiy. He must then olwoys oct in occordqnce with the noture Godhos given him. In the truest 'sense, he is cr rotionol, responsible being only when he does thcrt. Morol conduct tqhnusd pre- supposes our o consciousness of God dependence on Him, i.e. Fcrith. Consequently we regord ihe religious formotion of the pupils qs not merely desiroble but indeed indispenslble Jor their true development. In this regord, I om pleosed to report on the spirituol growth ol the boys cnd the good morol tone thot exists qmong them. I would like publicly to express my opprecio- tion ol the edilying exomple the Senior boys hove given in these mqtters. I would not suggest thot we ore uncrwqre thot there ore some whose lives ond conduct oppecl to be locking in 'sell-discipline, but the e{forts ol o very big number in oll clqsses to develop themselves spirituolly is the most rewording leqture of school li{e.
