Publication Team Dear Readers, Publisher: And, just like that, it’s summer. I’m not sure how much different that will look in my Christine Cumming life, other than the weather. After all, my son has been home every day for the past three months, and it looks like that will continue. I really have to hand it to my kid’s 1st grade Designer: teacher though. The way she continued to keep our class connected on Zoom, coming up Cameron Wrenn with ways every week to motivate and inspire learning, and working tirelessly, even with Content Coordinator: her own three kids at home. It feels a bit sad that 1st grade is over, and especially in this way. Lucinda Chrisman I wonder what summer will look like. I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling the grief over all the changes in our world right now. I do hope we can continue to find ways to not just cope but to thrive in these circumstances. It seems to be a time to slow down and reorder priorities a bit. Someday we’ll truly have 2020 hindsight! MPaeerttthieda Family! Do What You Love By Lucinda Chrisman | Photos By Kristin Lee Vincent 4 | June 2020

Originally from Los Angeles, high school sweethearts Mike and Debbie Partida always felt a pull to Santa Cruz. Throughout their 10 years before marriage, they found themselves visiting this area together and befriending locals, until someone finally asked them why they don’t just move here since they come so often! So they did. That was in 1993, one year after getting married. “We loved the vibe here and the friendly people,” recalls Debbie, 52. “It was a little more hippie back then, with Greenpeace and a lot of VW buses around.” Since then, they have raised a family they’re very proud of, while living in Live Oak for 26 years. Their two adult daughters, Jacklyn, 25, and Madeline, 20, have taken them on quite an exciting and unexpected musical journey, both taking to performing at an early age. It started with Jackie, who seemed born with a natural vocal ability and as a toddler was singing Linda Rondstadt songs. An excellent writer throughout school, she began writing songs at age 9, picking up the guitar soon after, and was performing in bands by age 11. At age 14 she won a national contest through Seventeen Magazine after submitting her songs. This kicked off an early career as a performer in several bands, getting a record deal, performing several times for the 49ers, and going on a national tour once she graduated from high school. Her parents were supportive the whole way, checking in with her every day, and very proud of how she conducted herself while out about the country as an 18 year old. Meanwhile, younger daughter Maddie had been involved in early sports like her sister had, but eventually grew tired of soccer and baseball and, following the encouragement of Jackie, began growing her vocal and keyboard talents too. As members of Jackie’s bands moved on, Maddie was encouraged to join in, until eventually the two sisters were performing together most often. Jackie had been losing her appetite for being the front person of the bands anyway, and enjoyed getting her little sister on stage with her, so it turned into a great combination. Maddie who describes herself as having social anxiety, has blossomed as a lead singer onstage and grown her own passionate following of fans. She says that performing helps her grow and stretch herself. “It’s been a long process getting myself out there,” admits Maddie. “But once I’m up there I have a lot of fun. My sister kind of forced me to do it since I was 11, and I’m glad now because it’s gotten easier over time and I just love putting smiles on people’ faces and sharing my music.” The Partida parents don’t know where their kids’ immense talents come from, as neither of them regard themselves as musical, other than Mike’s stint in a heavy metal rock band in high school that mostly involved a lot of screaming. Mike, 53, only recently learned that his own dad, now gone, had mixed with some upcoming Mexican-American musicians back in his day, sometimes singing on a well-known stage in Los Angeles with other headliners that went on to prominence. It also seems ironic that both girls found such joy in the spotlight, as they have always been naturally very quiet and reserved growing up. “The kids are like complete opposites of us. Our cat talks more,” jokes Mike, who describes himself and Debbie as outgoing, social and talkative. “I didn’t even know what Maddie’s voice sounded like till she was about 7!” Mike and Debbie both help manage Maddie’s developing music career the best they can, and they’re thrilled she wants them involved. Mike books her shows, is her roadie and sound guy, and has created a website for her (www.maddiepartida.com). Jackie, who believes strongly in Maddie’s talent and career prospects, still plays alongside her, as they share their music June 2020 | 5

around town at coffee houses, restaurants, as well as events Sipping hot coffee and fundraisers and other venues further away. Maddie’s talent with your Breakfast or has extended in other directions too, as she also loves to paint your favorite beverage and is a fashionista, creating her own fashion line. Now with with your Lunch and the distancing orders, she is turning toward the online space to Dinner... Enjoy it on share her music and talents with the public. She even recently our outdoor deck among made and donated a supply of fashionable face masks to staff at a beautiful and relaxing the Live Oak School District. setting along the banks of the Soquel Creek The district has been Debbie’s workplace for 25 years, and she is currently the administrative secretary to the principal at Del Mar Elementary. She loves working there and has become very close to the current principal, Marilyn Rockey, the longest-standing principal at the school having been there 10 years. In fact, Debbie admires her so much, she asked her to be the officiant at her daughter Jackie’s wedding recently. Jackie married a wonderful man named Garrett Kohls, who the Partidas regard very highly, along with his parents Brian and Stacie Kohls, and his younger sister Alex Kohls, who is now part of the Peace Corps in Africa. Jackie and Brian live in Los Gatos. Maddie lives with her parents and their tuxedo cat Sebastian at their current home in Soquel. Mike currently works in sales as a Bay Area representative for a Seattle-based auto insurance company. Being very social, he enjoys his job because it allows him to travel to dealerships and meet with people every day; obviously the shelter-in-place has curtailed his activities and he is maintaining client relationships from home. When they are not working or being musical, the Partida family loves to spend time together, whether cooking, watching movies or taking walks. They are very supportive of one another and try to laugh as much as possible. When asked about a family motto, they said it would be “do what you love, whether it’s for fun or professionally-speaking, and know when to stop and truly live in the moment.” Even though Live Oak is their first love, they enjoy their neighborhood in Soquel for how private it is, all the trees around, and inclusive and caring neighbors. “I think I’m in love with the entire Santa Cruz county to be honest,” says Debbie. “The area has so much beauty, which is definitely the reason we moved here and still appreciate it very much. I never want to leave, there is no place like it anywhere.” Pet Friendly 2591 MAIN STREET, SOQUEL 831.479.9777 MICHAELSONMAIN.COM TUES - FRI OPEN AT 7:00 AM SAT / SUN OPEN AT 7:00 AM June 2020 | 7

Pet of the Month Tucker By Jill Ganley, Foster & Volunteer Coordinator Meet our resident cheerleader-meets- comedian-meets- Energizer Bunny. Tucker is perpetually enthusiastic about almost everything, being poked and prodded in the vet clinic being an ID#A268862 understandable exception, but even then he was non- aggressive. He’s been described by staff as “a happy-go-lucky kind of guy” and “friendly and bouncy.” Tucker was in foster with one of our awesome dog volunteers. She Ask us about our Tuition Assistance Program said he walked nicely on leash and did well in the crate. During the day Tucker would go for the occasional walk and then would spend 425 ENCINAL ST. the rest of his time lounging on foster mom’s bed. Tucker came to the SANTA CRUZ, CA 95060 shelter as an intact male. With being intact comes marking. With the help of positive reinforcement based training, Tucker caught on to 831-423-0658 potty training and has made great strides. Adopters would need to be KIRBY.ORG dedicated to training and continuing to work on Tucker’s life skills and manners. Discover the Difference of an Independent School Education. Tucker was introduced to two, small, female dogs at the Shelter and was interested in both, did some running around with them, but World-class College Prep • Classes Averaging 12 would get distracted easily and go off to pursue other interests. He Students • Inspiring Faculty • Caring Community will sometimes bark at larger sized dogs, especially if they are already reacting to him. It seems Tucker would do best if he lived with a June 2020 | 9 similarly sized easy going dog. Tucker will need to meet any resident dogs in his future home to make sure there’s good chemistry. Tucker was in foster with a cat and, after a few days of careful integration and management, he coexisted nicely. Our astute vet staff noticed that Tucker has some dental issues that need tending to. We will be taking care of whatever our clinic has the capacity to handle. He also came to us very dirty and with itchy skin, which we are also working on. His adopters should be prepared to follow up with their veterinarian with a specific focus on a healthy set of chompers and making sure he (literally) stays comfortable in his own skin. We are currently doing adoptions by appointment only. Applications must be submitted and landlord permission or proof of home ownership received prior to arranging a meet. How Movement & As energetic beings, it is completely natural Mindfulness Can to feel consumed by the unsettling and Ease Anxiety During uncertain challenges we are facing. Even Turbulent Times if you or someone close to you has not experienced COVID-19 firsthand we are all By Bayley Blackney, Yoga Teacher at Breath+Oneness affected in some way by this global crisis. We are being asked to stay at home which is uncomfortable for all of us, scary for those who are at risk, and tragic for many small businesses. Although we face uncertainty, we are also presented with the opportunity to process emotion more fully, to bring awareness to our mental health and to ease anxiety through movement and mindfulness. If you are someone who already has a physical practice of some kind, whether it be yoga, running, swimming, or dancing, you probably already have at least a taste of how movement releases endorphins in the body. These endorphins give us that euphoric “high” we experience after we work up a sweat. Energetically speaking, we are able to move energy around in the body and even release trauma by physically targeting areas in the body that could use extra attention (e.g. tightness in the hips, side body, or low spine). Although we are being told to stay at our homes, you can still create a movement practice by yourself or use the opportunity to connect with your family or household. It can be helpful and motivating to create a sacred space within your home by decluttering, and designating some space to your ritual or practice. can oftentimes lead to a bit more peace of mind and eliminates distractions from your self-care routine. Although you do not need a lot of space to move, finding a secluded space in nature could feel more healing and less confining, especially for individuals who live in smaller spaces. Movement can bring awareness to our mind-body connection, while stillness can help us delve deeper into our emotions by pausing and recognizing the feelings we are experiencing at any given time. Think of this process as a daily check in with your mind, heart, and body, giving it the same care and attention you would if you were talking to a child or a child-like version of yourself. A History of Connecting to Nature on the Shore By Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History Santa Cruz Museum Ad Placeholder The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History has served this 14 | June 2020 community for 115 years. It was founded on the collections of Laura Hecox, the daughter of Santa Cruz’s very first lighthouse keeper. Laura grew up living in the lighthouse (a different building on the same spot near Lighthouse Field), and like many of us, she explored the shore where as a child she began collecting seashells, fossils, rocks and other artifacts. Her childhood love of exploring and collecting flourished into a lifelong passion, and Laura became a well-respected naturalist, especially respected for her knowledge and collection of shells. It is that collection, which was first on display to the public in the lighthouse, that was deeded to the city for its first museum in 1904. Since its founding, the Museum’s collections have grown and have been housed in many places, including government

buildings, libraries, and schools. The Museum of Natural History first came to the Seabright community in 1930, first to the Craft House and then to its current home, a Carnegie Library, in 1954. It is in that beach neighborhood where the Museum has grown and transformed into a community institution, not only stewarding a collection of natural history specimens, but also actively serving the public with educational programs and exhibits that connect people with the natural resources that make this region unique. Since the docent program began in 1980, many locals came through the Museum’s doors with classroom field trips, and have stopped to play on the grey whale statue in the city park right outside. In 2009, the Museum became an independent non-profit, no longer run by the City of Santa Cruz. Since then, it has continued to grow with community support. Permanent exhibits allow visitors to interact with natural specimens, to view animals up close, and to explore the cultural connections to nature of indigenous people, while reflecting upon our varied ways of relating to the environment. Natural history specimens like the ones collected by Laura as a child do not sit on dusty shelves, but take on an important role as ambassadors for biodiversity, tools for discovery, and inspiration for budding scientists and lifelong learners alike. Over a century later, at the heart of our museum remains the same spirit of discovery and love of the natural world that our founder, Laura Hecox exemplified. Whether in our building, on a field trip, or through our digital resources, we seek to promote an appreciation of nature, and to foster curiosity and exploration. Who knows what legacy or impact will come from the joy of a child or child-at-heart who loves to explore their environment? The Museum’s mission is to connect people with nature and science to inspire stewardship of the natural world. We hope that our neighbors will continue to connect with us in exploration, appreciation, and stewardship of our beautiful coastal habitats. Now, more than ever we do our best to rely on science and turn to nature for comfort, community, and health.
