“My grandmother back in Africa was very community- oriented and I witnessed her actively helping others,” recalls Deutron of his childhood. “I feel like I inherited a passion for social justice from her and my mom reinforced it too. I like to call what I do now ‘community engineering’ - using the concept of engineering to improve the health and wellbeing of communities.” Having had some first-hand exposure to foster care, Deutron felt drawn to improve the system and help the kids in it. He realized that kids in the system so often came from homes with absent fathers, and he longed to better understand why this was happening. He became the director on a three-year research project that studied the impact of positive father involvement and co-parenting, and when that concluded he knew he wanted to put his energy into improving that relationship. In 2017 he started a nonprofit called MENtors Driving Change for Boys, Men and Dads, with a mission to work on the whole spectrum of male socialization and healthy masculinity, supporting boys and men in reaching their full potential as healthy members of their families and communities. “It’s very inspiring, I always admire how much impact he has on people’s lives,” says Evin of her husband’s work. “When I met him, he was a board member of 6 different local non-profit organizations, so clearly he doesn’t do this for monetary gain and he puts 100% of his heart into what he does. It’s really a beautiful thing to watch.” In addition to his work with a wide range of dads in groups and one-on-one, helping them to navigate fatherhood, Deutron has enjoyed working with some local schools to create a space for boys to have conversations with mentors about topics surrounding masculinity. He sees that boys are hungry for a place to feel safe and not judged or afraid to ask questions, while they are faced with constant bombardment of social media, bullying and confusing messages. He’s working on enlisting 100 mentors in our community to provide cross-generational wisdom about what it means to be a man in the 21st century, given that so many families today are pretty isolated. Lula has already seen about 10 countries including Japan, Indonesia and The Netherlands, and the family is committed to making sure their daughter is a world citizen. “We consider ourselves explorers, and love learning about the culture and the food and meeting people,” they share. “Travel opens up a perspective and connects you as part of the human family beyond just Santa Cruz. We love having that exposure for us and for Lula.” With world travel tempered for now, they continue to discover what our beautiful county has to offer, from hiking at Nisene Marks State Park, walking by cliffs at the Wilder Ranch, strolling on West Cliff, sunset at Pleasure Point, and ice cream at Penny Ice Creamery. They are excited to expose Lula to the heart and soul of the whole county, beyond simply the “big” attractions. They’ve been picking their ripe tomatoes in their garden and diving into nature spots; they’ve loved having the State Parks pass. Evin says she can’t wait for Lula to get into the water and hopefully take to surfing someday. “Lula is a Santa Cruz girl,” says Deutron. “And having seen a lot of the world, we feel privileged to live in America. TPeat olfiathe &MonKthira BIGSwim withthe Fish By Jill Ganley, Foster & Volunteer Coordinator Contact the Publisher of this magazine for ID#A271005 & A271006 more information. Hello all, Pet of the Week is a bonded pair of feline sisters – Talia (A271005) & Kira (A271006)! Talia and Kira are 4 month old bonded sisters who are looking for a home together. They originally came to the Shelter as strays; nervous and unsure about the world around them. A wonderful foster family took them in to provide them with a safe space to blossom. And blossom they did! Talia is a love bug and professional purr-er. She likes crinkle toys, being petted, and wand toys. Kira is the more shy of the two sisters but once she is comfortable, she LOVES to play. She loves to play with ping pong balls and fuzzy mice toys. Kira and Talia love to zoom around with each other and wrestle. Both girls are still getting used to handling and being held for long periods of time. An adopter will need to be patient with their transition, socialization, and growing confidence. These girls would be best in a home with cat savvy adopters and no young children. Cat-social and playful cats may be appropriate role models for these girls. If you are interested in meeting Tali and Kira, visit or call the Shelter during open hours (10am -6pm daily) at 831-454-7200 x0. While clothing depends on the climate and weather, you should generally stick to clothing with less drag. Leave the jeans and sweatpants at home. Form- fitting materials like spandex fit the bill; I do just fine with leggings and a fitted top.
