Preface The first six years of a child’s life have been recognized as the most critical ones. The quality of education and the care provided during this period determines the development and growth of the late childhood period and eventually, for the rest of his/her life-span. Hence, building a strong base by providing quality education and care in the early childhood period becomes essentially important. The ‘Shining Stars’ series aims at holistic development and has been designed comprehensively catering to all the domains of child’s development- linguistic, cognitive, social and emotional, creative and fine motor skills. This series offers integrated learning experiences through reading, writing, play and hands-on activities that are vital in a pre-primary curriculum. Theme based learning nurtures over-all development in children and helps them to connect with the immediate world and also connect classroom learning to their lives at home. The need for a book that will encourage the young children to grow as independent thinkers is what prompted the creation of this series. It has been gently graded to teach children the basic skills and gradually accustom them to an integrated style of learning. To develop the literacy skills, children must be able to identify the letters in printed form, in and out of sequence and should also be able to recognize the sound attached to each letter. Hence, the letters have been introduced keeping in mind the initial phonic sound. Each letter is taught through five different words having similar phonic sounds. These words are further depicted through colourful real-life images. A sincere effort has been made to expose the children to different words so as to enhance their vocabulary. Children are also exposed to stories, rhymes and poems to further expand their vocabulary stock. To boost up math skills, numbers have been introduced using the similar images of the objects used while learning letters. This would enable the children to relate and reinforce the concepts learnt earlier. The number concept is presented in a manner that children can identify them easily in printed form and are able to use its value in concrete form as well. The concepts of environmental studies are similarly integrated with letters and numbers and they have been presented according to a theme. This caters to the philosophy of integrated and theme-based learning. The ‘Shining Stars’ series is framed aptly to integrate all aspects of learning. Hence, it requires the support and active involvement of the teachers and parents as well. We believe that without their sincere participation learning can never be holistic. 3 S UCB-2
Shining Stars A Package with an Integrated Approach Sailent Features Learning is more meaningful if different content areas are blended for curriculum and instruction. Extensive learning happens when integration of themes and real-life activities happens. In the Kindergarten of the new K to 12 Curriculum, the use of integrated approach in facilitating learning of varied skills like literacy, numeracy, science, values etc. is stressed upon. The ‘Shining Stars’ a three-level integrated preschool series is built on the foundation of the K to 12 Curriculum set by the Department of Education. It uses multi-disciplinary connections that allow each book to integrate its lessons with all the subjects, thus enabling pupils to become well-rounded learners. The ‘Shining Stars’ series is one of its kind as it has an integrated approach that helps pupils acquire more knowledge by linking learning content among the core subjects namely literacy, numeracy and environmental studies. Children are able to connect what they learn in one subject area to a related content in another subject area. For instance, a word that they get to learn under alphabet ‘A’ is used as an example to learn Math and it is carried forward to learn about fruits too. The quality of learning outcomes improves as children are able to integrate information across disciplines instead of acquiring them in isolation, thus accomplishing challenging but achievable goals of child development and learning. This series ensures that students learn both qualitatively and quantitatively and are thus fully prepared for the next steps in the education ladder. 4 S UCB-2
