The President noted that this was his 4th visit to Homa Bay since August last year when he was elected President and said it was normal for him to visit as many places in his country as it would be necessary. He said that despite Nyanza region being a hot opposition zone for his government, he will ensure that the region will get equal development opportunity alongside all other regions in the country. The Head of State announced that his government will pump Sh 300 million to build a fish market in Homa Bay and ensure that no more fish would be imported from outside the country as is the case today. President Ruto informed the country that high taxes will be im- posed on all imported goods which are available in the country includ- ing food stuffs such as fish and other items like furnisher. By imposing high taxes on imports, it will discourage the trad- ers so that they get accustomed to locally made products and create employment for the many jobless Kenyan youths. He also announced that the government will put in Sh 1 billion to build piers at Homa Bay, Kendu Bay and Mbita as well as build 8 modern markets in Homa Bay and provide a Ferry for ease of water transport in the region. On addressing the high cost of living obtaining in the country currently, the President told his gathering that the number one issue his government addressed was food which was to be tackled by providing 4 million bags of fertilizer that was distributed all over the country and which, alongside good rainfall, will give Kenya a bumper harvest which will bring the cost of unga to very low levels unseen in recent years. He said this year, the government will provide between 7-8 mil- lion bags of fertilizer so as to ensure that lack of food for Kenyans will be a bygone issue. Turning to politics, President Ruto said that he was ready to engage with all elected leaders who are ready to work with him for the good of the people they represent, saying this is laying a new founda- tion for Kenya’s politics where no one should be profiled for his politi- cal briefs or standing. The President admitted that whilst demonstrations and picket- ing were allowed by the constitution which he swore to defend, it is self defeating for any Kenyan to use that constitutional proviso to en- gage in acts of hooliganism and criminality by destroying both public and private properties as well as the lives of Kenyans which he also swore to defend. He had, in his opening speech heaped praises to Dr Omollo saying he is performing his duties perfectly well and declared that he ensured that position of Interior PS as well as that of the Chief of De- fense Forces ( CDF ) went to Nyanza to break away from innuendos that those positions can’t go to Nyanza. General Francis Ogolla was appointed by the President a cou- ple of months ago to head the Military in Kenya and said that Gen Ogolla was a professional Military man who got the position on merit and that he has confidence in his ability to lead the Military in Kenya.
